Four, count em Four

I think WYSP is keeping other stations in the market from switching over to a Rock format full-time.

What on earth does that mean? How is YSP/CBS keeping another station from flipping? Any station can change at any time for any reason.

It means that people are going to look and say "Philly already has a Rock station" and bypass it to fill another format hole. That's why we have a Rumba station and a Rhythmic AC instead of Active Rock or Alternative. I certainly don't think it's part of any racist agenda. These media outlets figure "Hey, there are enough stations that appeal to Caucasian Males" and decide to target a demographic that they feel is underserved, or has a disposible income (either teens or soccer moms, hence the plethora of stations that target these groups).

If even one of these stations were to sign off (WYSP being the obvious candidate given its low ratings), I guarantee you that someone would jump up to put on a full-time Rocker in the market. I don't know how YSP reports now (what are they, 1/3 Talk, 1/3 Rock, and 1/3 Sports?), but less competition would give another company more incentive to give the format another shot.

You keep talking about a rock station, so what do you call MMR, the Hawk, XPn and MGK? Suburbia?

WXPN is a listener supported AAA-type station, when they're not doing the Y-100 thing. It's alright, but will not satisfy those craving something edgier than, say, Jack Johnson.

Forget about the other stations. The Hawk and MGK are generic, by-the-book Classic Rock stations - I would rather watch paint dry than listen to them. And WMMR isn't much better with its AOR format. The bottom line is this: The options for people that want to hear post-Bon Jovi rock are nonexistant. The situation is the same in NYC and all New Jersey markets except for AC / Cape May - great if you want a station as bland and safe as 92.3 K-Rock was, but a total bore if you've been a fan of rock music for more than a year. It's a shame that these companies seem to have forgotten the concept of Burn. Maybe radio would be far more interesting to listen to without all this lame repetition - that approach works fine for hit music stations, but not for a so-called Active Rock / Alternative.

But WXPN is what you would consider a "white station" I just took over a Triple A station that I flipped. Most of the music I was getting in for Triple A was rock. Im not saying its a rock format but its close. A rock station playing more currents wont work in the minds of these companies. Ill throw it in the same boat as doing an all dance station.

"Hispanics in Philadelphia, most of whom are born US citizens just like you and me, deserve to be served, too."

Not really; they don't deserve any format just like those who enjoy Polynesian or Baltic music don't.

I don't think there is a concentrated group of Americans in any market that enjoy Baltic music... so there is no exclusion of a significant taste group. On the other hand, there is a significant Puerto Rican community in Philly, and it has been underserved.

There's a significant Asian populatrion in the city (only 1% smaller then the hispanic) Shouldn't they get a station? Ofcoarse the same problem would arise, on who you program to, but I would go with the Chinese.

"Asian" is not a language, and Asians may speak any of the dialects of Chnese, thai, Cambodia, Tagalog, Japanese, Korean, etc. There is no lingua franca except English.

And no US jurisdiction has any Asian tongue as its official langauge, which is the opposite of the case for Spanish.
