X Factor and New Girl offset American Idol losses for FOX.

Sunday Night Football and The Superbowl moved NBC into 3rd place above ABC.

Average CBS age 55.6 followed by ABC 52.3, NBC 49.3, FOX 46.2, CW 37.1. CW aged the most
this year. NBC was the only network to go a tad younger. (I guess that's why a lot on here are
watching Me-TV and Antenna TV).

Fox is still the #1 network alright...in the 18-49 demos.

But of course, when it came to total viewers, CBS remains America's Most-Watched Network with NBC still America's #4 Network (with just a 5% increase from last year).

A lot of The CW audience has been moving to watching their shows online, so that might account for the possible loss.
I'm sure there was a big celebration down at 30 Rock when they heard that NBC wasn't the last place network anymore!

Heck, there was an even bigger celebration that one of their shows (Sunday Night Football) has ended American Idol's eight-year reign as TV's most-watched program!!!!

Which really makes NBC's 4th place status in total viewers all the more perplexing. You have a network that can't convert its Sunday night viewers into viewers the rest of the week?

Then again, NBC did choose to heavily promote "Whitney" during SNF this year...

Then again, NBC did choose to heavily promote "Whitney" during SNF this year...

ABC had the same problems with the old Monday Night Football package, and that's probably why 'losing it' to ESPN was never that harmful.

Even with more women following the NFL, the overall audience for Sunday Night Football probably isn't universally interested in a Whitney, a Smash, or a Best Friends Forever--or, pro football isn't necessarily what those respective shows desired audiences would be watching at that time. But NBC has to promote them anyway--that's too many eyeballs to pass up.

You can over-promote a show like Whitney to the biggest audience of the year, but if the show is just bad it's not going to help one bit. The Neilson list put it at what, # 107?

ABC did the same thing with PAN AM. So, many times they are really trying to sell it to you,
much like a drug dealer on the street (who knows his weed is not very good).

It might just be a matter of what's on the rest of the week. Maybe the 55+ crowd just isn't too interested in what NBC is catering, besides Jay Leno of course.
Clearly, the advantage the networks want is in 18-49, because that's what makes money, so NBC would surely rather still be last in total viewing, but be third in 18-49.
