Fox 10 o'clock news going to 1 hour...

announced tonight by Kevin Doran, as of 3/3/08 the Fox broadcast 10pm news is expanding itself to 1 hour. More local coverage, sports, etc.

Comments...

There's a few different markets in New York State with a Fox station that does a 10pm newscast. For those of us who don't live in the same market as you do, and don't have a mental list of every single anchor in the state... could ya help us out? Just because most of us seem to be in Syracuse or Rochester doesn't mean we should always assume everyone knows who we're talking about. Markets or at least call letters are always helpful anytime a new thread is started.

Even a Google search for "Kevin Doran" turned up a pageful of irrelevant entries. I had to go for "Kevin Doran" +fox, and then scroll almost all the way down the page before I saw a listing for rochesterhomepage.net.

On a side note, I think that's great news to see them expanding to a full hour. It's not often you see Nexstar or Sinclair expanding news. But wow, a full hour... if they're doing it live, that's going to go right up against the wall for the 11pm show on WROC, isn't it? What about nights when Fox has live (sports) programming that goes beyond 10:00? Will they have to pre-tape the news so it can run in its entirety... or will they just drop items accordingly to compress the show down to end at 11:00? I would imagine the former would be preferred by the sales department... but then you're screwed if there's breaking news or severe weather where 30- or 45-minute-old doppler images just don't work.

Re: Fox 10 o'clock news going to 1 hour... WHY?

My comment would be “how in the heck are they going to pull this off?”

WROC 's news staff is already stretched thin, and now to have 31's news go for an hour doesn't give the technical staff in the control room much time to get ready for the 11pm news on 8.

While I wish them the best of luck all I can say is that there are going to be plenty of tired people come 11:30pm.

They'll pull it off by filling with lots of weather, sports, and national. They'll rerack packages from the early shows. It's a smoke and mirrors game that Channel 8 has been doing for years.

A good number of Fox stations that carry news typically do have hour-long newscasts at ten, WXXA in Albany being one example. Of course WUTV, WUHF, and WSYT all seem to be those occasional exceptions, mainly due to the fact that their part of a duopoly and the owners are really cheap when it comes to the news.

My guess--and I've seen this happen on other Fox stations with their 10PM newshours--is that the news at ten on WUHF will have lots of filler fluff pieces from Fox News. Which, of course, is something Nexstar won't be loosing sleep over.

Same here. I'm guessing they'll use a lot of Pathfire packages.

Well, if you look at it one way -- it's just the same as doing news from 5 to 6:30, straight through. Fundamentally, the only difference is that one master control station is dropping you at 11, and another station is picking you up. You just have to be ready for the entire 90 minutes (or 95 in the case of the 11 being 35 minutes long) before it begins.

But bear in mind, WXXA is an independent operation. They can easily do a full-hour because that's all they have to worry about. They aren't turning around and pulling another half-hour of news on a different channel at 11pm.

As I said in my first post -- what happens when Fox network programming runs late? At least with a 30-minute show, you've got some buffer time... and pre-taping a 30-minute show only requires you to have things done a little earlier than normal. If you have to pre-tape an entire hour because Fox might run late, that's going to be a big hassle. WXXA doesn't have to worry about it... if Fox Sports goes until 10:45, they can still go live for the full hour afterwards. But WROC's newscast on WUHF can't be live at 10:45 if the same people and equipment are being used to do WROC's "main" newscast at 11:00.

First of all, yes we are talking about Fox Rochester.
They did an hour newscast before. It was a noble effort but failed. Then they went to that awful "wheel" format. Personally, I don't like hour newscast. Face it, in any Upstate N. Y. market a fifteen minute newscast would be long enough to report all the local news, weather & sports on most days. The rest is fluff and repeats of what they have already done -weather & sports updates. Hour newscasts exists only to be commercial separators. I would rather watch Seinfeld for the umpteenth time
