Fox 25th anniversary - thoughts on the reunion show

Great! who knew TV would get better when FOX debuted. In 1987 all we had was ABC ,CBS & NBC and independent channels ,FOX launched on my birthday April 5 ,1987.

Technically, it launched in October of 1986 with Joan Rivers' failed talk show. For this night, I give these pluses and minuses:

Airing the pilot of Married...With Children from April 5, 1987 was a nice touch. However...why was it edited like it was an episode in syndication? FOX also re-aired the Christmas episode of The Simpsons, a.k.a. the first half-hour episode, from 1989-90. Boy did everything look low-budget then.

As for the show itself...could Ryan Seacrest and Job Buck been more smug and/or stuck on themselves?

Is it edited on the DVD sets? Maybe the original unedited episode was wiped?

I meant edited, as in the points they went to and came back from commercials. It was obviously not at the points they were in for the the 1987 original.

As for the cast reunions...did anybody notice that Damon Wayans wasn't with his three brothers which were interviewed? As for Married...With Children, I know Christina Applegate has had her health issues these last couple of years. Ed O'Neill didn't seem to age well. (I know he's part of a current ABC show, but I haven't watched it.)

Since it's more recent, I could have used alot less American Idol highlights and I would have like alot more of the "old" stuff such as In Living Color and other highlights plus more from the Married With Children, That 70s Show, and ILC cast reunions. ILC was in the last 5 minutes or so.

Christina had a double mastectomy, I believe, a year or two ago. Ed is in Modern Family. I haven't watched it either. Would have been funny if Ted McGinley (Jefferson D'arcy) had been there and talked about the 'jumping the shark' thing. ;D

I liked it. Brought back many old memories. I think it was separated well into segments like Sci-Fi, Sports, Dramas, etc. Like Seacrest said, hard to jam 140K+ hours into 2 hours. Would've liked to seen more of the older comedies like Parker Lewis and Herman's Head.

Too bad they didn't show clips of Titus, Undeclared, Action, That ’80s Show, Wonderfalls, Fastlane, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Skin, Girls Club, Cracking Up, The Pitts, Firefly, Get Real, Freakylinks, Wanda at Large, Costello, The Lone Gunmen, A Minute With Stan Hooper, Normal Ohio, Pasadena, Harsh Realm, Keen Eddie, The $treet, American Embassy, Cedric the Entertainer, The Tick, Louie or Greg the Bunnny or Kitchen Confidential, The Wedding Bells, Happy Hour, The War at Home, Drive, The Winner, Life on a Stick, The Loop, Head Cases, Standoff, Vanished, Free Ride, Method and Red, Tru Calling, Quintuplets, Stacked, Justice, North Shore, Back to You ;D

They didn't seem to feature much on their black comedies. Outside in living color that is. Fox during the early years they were the first network to dedicate a few entire primetime nights to several great black comedies like Martin, Roc, living single, and none of them got any mention. Maybe I missed it, all I saw was Bernie Mac (which isn't from the early days) & a quick shot of living single during the opening segment.

Not much from the early days besides The Simpsons and Married with Children, and BH90210, where was the Joan Rivers show?

There was a very quick clip of Late Show with Joan Rivers within a longer compilation scene. Doubt Joan would have participated if they asked her at all. Remember, they fired her but also had fired her husband who went on to commit suicide.

All reports are that she's recovered nicely from that. She recently had a baby, which is more likely
the reason she chose not to appear on the show.

Ed O'Neill is not looking very good on Modern Family though.

It was almost definitely the syndicated cut. The theme was the syndie version, which snips out the refrain ("Try, try, try to separate them...") and the bit where Al gives everyone money. This version wasn't used on network episodes until the final season or two. Also, the opening sequence didn't originally use footage of the actors under their credits during the first two seasons; only a black screen.

And, as KML-224 mentions, the syndicated versions have "unnatural act breaks" added. Fox versions aired in the following format:

Opening Credits
Commercial
Act 1
Commercial
Act 2
Commercial
End Credits

The original version of the first episode is available unedited on the season one DVD, and is probably still on tape in Fox's library. It's a shame the network couldn't sacrifice a few minutes of commercial time last night to show their first show the way it was originally presented 25 years ago.

They've been promoting this with a shot of Philip J. Fry from Futurama yet didn't mention Futurama once.

Also they gave a lot of time to In Living Color without one mention of Mad TV.

Also, how many people snorted with disgust when FOX said they showed love for the Sci-Fi genre. I'm surprised Fringe is still on.

Disappointing.

Mad TV was shown, in one brief clip from its last season or so. It was VERY irritating that they gave more time to American Idol and only showed 3 of the Wayans Brothers (where was Damon?) and then Tommy Davidson separately for In Living Color. Jennifer Lopez was shown introducing Keenan in one clip, with no other mention about her. Jim Carrey was mentioned, of course. Correct about Roc, although I think there WAS a short clip from Living Single.
