Fox 46 changes newscasts

I went looking for the topic here but didn't find it. People here thought the Fox 46 newscasts were ridiculous. Well, apparently enough people did that they have to put a stop to what they were doing.

I don't have the link because my Internet is so slow and I didn't think about this at any libraries, but Mark Washburn's first column in the "new" Observer, which I hate, was about the change.

I posted here because the original topic would have been here.

FOX-46 is now presenting a more traditional style newscast which is now similar to the other FOX owned stations, including the FOX style graphics. Overall a big improvement, but they have a ways to go in the ratings. WAXN-64 now has the top rated 10pm newscast which is produced by sister station WSOC. WCCB has slipped to second place at 10 after the change from FOX to CW. So far, WJZY has not held on to the 10pm audience from FOX.

And regarding the new format of the Observer, it mainly seems to be another attempt to disguise shrinking content. What used to be 4 or 5 distinct separate sections are now condensed into 1 or 2. There use to be the main front section for national and world news and the op/ed page, a local and state section, a business section, sports section and Carolina Living. Now they have reduced more content and raised the price to a dollar. I do like the idea of the Insight section for expanded coverage and commentary, but it is mainly being used to conceal overall shrinking coverage into one section.

They still distribute the Observer in Greenville-Spartanburg, where it is sold at Publix and QuikTrip, and a local newsstand store. But they only charge the regular dollar price, which is no way they can generate any profit from long distance distribution without raising the rate. But if they did that nobody would buy it. As the local Greenville News is equally decent or mediocre, however you choose to consider it. But at least the Greenville News has a nice USA Today section included for the same price, with the main stories from all sections of USA Today. I think the Observer only is delivered here because the same courier also delivers the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, which apparently are printed and distributed from Charlotte in this region. So they just include the Observer as a piggyback arrangement, as they don't really make any money; they are lucky to just break even.

Here in Greenville, SC I can reliably receive WBTV, WCNC, WJZY, and WMYT. And of course WYFF, WSPA, and WHNS. But WLOS is problematic from Asheville, and I can only get WSOC and WCCB at night, although they can be received in Spartanburg. I mainly watch WBTV and sometimes WCNC for Charlotte news, unless it is 11pm and WSOC may come in. Locally here I prefer WYFF over WSPA and I do not care for the infotainment style of WHNS. I will continue to check out WJZY as their news format is improving as a work in progress. But I am glad to see them go to a more standard style newscast, as I knew that failed experiment as an alternative style newscast would not work.

We should probably start a new topic for this on one of the TV boards, but you have trouble with WLOS in Greenville? I would imagine that's related to the station being on VHF, but with such a tower I'm amazed.

I wondered when that would happen.

Anyway, now we're free to talk about TV.

I guess WSPA is not a problem because it's so close.
