And regarding the new format of the Observer, it mainly seems to be another attempt to disguise shrinking content. What used to be 4 or 5 distinct separate sections are now condensed into 1 or 2. There use to be the main front section for national and world news and the op/ed page, a local and state section, a business section, sports section and Carolina Living. Now they have reduced more content and raised the price to a dollar. I do like the idea of the Insight section for expanded coverage and commentary, but it is mainly being used to conceal overall shrinking coverage into one section.
They still distribute the Observer in Greenville-Spartanburg, where it is sold at Publix and QuikTrip, and a local newsstand store. But they only charge the regular dollar price, which is no way they can generate any profit from long distance distribution without raising the rate. But if they did that nobody would buy it. As the local Greenville News is equally decent or mediocre, however you choose to consider it. But at least the Greenville News has a nice USA Today section included for the same price, with the main stories from all sections of USA Today. I think the Observer only is delivered here because the same courier also delivers the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, which apparently are printed and distributed from Charlotte in this region. So they just include the Observer as a piggyback arrangement, as they don't really make any money; they are lucky to just break even.
