FOX 5 being droped in Poconos

WOLF FOX 56 Scranton, PA is making Blue Ridge Cable drop WNYW FOX 5 New York and WTXF FOX 29 Philadelphia off its cable systems in Monroe County, PA. This is sad news for people who live in the Stroudsburg, Tannersville, and Mount Pocono areas who commute to New York and New Jersey for work. More people from Monroe County go to New Jersey and New York City than Scranton & WB. The good news is Blue Ridge Cable will still carry WCBS 2, WNBC 4, WWOR 9, and WPIX 11 from New York City on its Monroe County cable system as well as KYW 3, WPVI 6, and WCAU 10 from Philadelphia. Most people living in the Poconos either commute or relate with NJ, NYC, or Philly, not Scranton and watch news, weather, traffic, and sports from either NYC or Philly.

Here is the note posted on the Blue Ridge website as of May 28, 2009.

WOLF-TV FOX 56 exercised its exclusive right to the Wilkes Barre Scranton Market thus forcing us to remove WNYW and in some areas WTXF. Blue Ridge tried everything to not let this happen but WOLF would not agree to rescind their rights. Effective May 28th, some FOX channels will no longer be available in the Wilkes Barre/Scranton market because WOLF-56 has requested we remove them from our channel lineup. Also effective May 28th, we will be removing WOLF-56 from our channel lineups in the New York Market. This is upon the request of WOLF-56 because they are telling us we do not have the right to retransmit their channel in the New York market area. We did everything possible to keep these channels on, but the Networks required us to remove them.

Where in the NY market is WOLF being carried? And why would WOLF want their own channel removed? Wouldn't they want as many potential viewers as possible?

Umm, it's WNYW that's being removed, not WOLF.

Off-topic: what a horrible commute that must be, from the Poconos to NYC five days a week. I would never do it.

No, read the third sentence in the last paragraph of Red Bull Ed's post again. WOLF is demanding its channel be removed, which seems odd.

You are both correct. WOLF-TV FOX 56 Scranton is carried on cable in Pike County, PA, Sullivan County, NY, and a small part of Orange County, NY. Those counties are in the New York City DMA. Most of the Scranton TV stations are carried in those counties. The weather is similar, Scranton is closer, and the OTA signal can be picked up in most of those areas. It is stupid for WOLF to request it be taken off those systems and loose viewers. During football season Scranton carries more games than just the Giants and Jets.

It is also awful the WNYW FOX 5 is being droped off Blue Ridge Cable TV in Monroe County, PA and most of the Poconos because of WOLF's request. (read earlier thread to this post) WNYW FOX 5 is carried in the Allentown, Easton, and Leigh Valley areas of eastern PA with WTXF FOX 29 Philadelphia. Both stations O & O by FOX so no problems there as with all NYC & Philly overlap and border areas. (Example: Monmouth, Ocean, Mercer, Middlesex, Hunderton, Warren counties, ect.) But I guess WOLF TVs ownership is making it an issue between Scranton and all other markets. It's a shame. GIANTS football fans will loose out this fall because of WOLF TV FOX 56 if we are forced to watch Eagles games instead of Big Blue. There are more GIKANTS fans in the Poconos.

I would imagine that BRC systems in Honesdale, Hawley, and Beach Lake will also be dumping WNYW as well, which is a real disgrace.

As far as Sullivan County NY goes, as I had mentioned in the Classic TV forum when I posted a cable TV lineup, Sullivan County NY *used* to be BRC. Not sure what the circumstances are that led the cable provider to change (I think to Vision Cable or Cable Vision, but it's now Time Warner), but when they were BRC, they carried WNYW as well, and added WOLF in 1986 about a year after it signed on. WNYW is on dial 5, and WOLF on dial 12, but back sometime in the '80s or '90s, WOLF was put on 5 (where it seems to be on a lot of NE PA cable systems) and WNYW relegated to 12. I would imagine WOLF will probably move back to 5 again...

On the NY state side, TWC doesn't seem to even have WOLF on their cable for Tusten (Narrowsburg) or Middletown or Monticello....

I believe the only Scranton station Time Warner carries in those areas is CBS affiliate WYOU.
