Fox 5 news going HD?

Looks like the reason Fox 5 doesn't have the new O&O look yet may have to do with becoming the 3rd station in town with HD news.

They ran a message saying "Fox 5 News in HD brought to you by Brandsmart USA".

These type of accidental trips usually lead up to something (WSB's HD News, for example).

Fox's stations in Philadelphia and Cleveland have HD news.

I wonder if WGCL will file for bankruptcy so they can go HD too.

Looks like the change could be imminent. All of their reporters in Americus during tonight's 10PM newscast were wearing jackets with the new logo; and the anchors were at temporary set... appears to be the usual interview set (flat panel LCD behind it) with the old news desk rolled in front of it. Perhaps construction is underway.

Yep. They must be, and I hope they do it fast. That temporary set is taking me back to 1979.

Today, the FOX 5 field reporters are using mic covers with the new vertical FOX 5 logo. They are huge covers!!! The FOX 5 News logo is on 2 sides (side-by-side) then on the other 2 side-by-side sides is the Fox News logo. Usually station and network logos are opposite from each other on mics.

It's done like that so the mic can be turned to where the local logo isn't visible if a reporter is needed to do a story for the network. Alot of O&Os are doing that with their mic flags.

Wow -- those are probably among the biggest mic flags I've ever seen. No chance in you missing them at a newser -- there's barely any room for the reporter to grab onto the mic itself.

i heard through the grapevine that the set will be ready by mid march and rehearsals will start on the new set around then.

so hopefully, it will be VERY soon that it will debut.

Anybody remember how long WSB and WXIA were on their temporary sets before they moved to the new HD sets? I think it was around amonth or so. Obviously, this is more complicated than just a new set, so it will take a while, I'm sure.

Saw a commercial for the "New Fox5", starting a week from today, 3/26/2007. Not sure if it will be in HD though.
They must be going HD. That would be a very stupid move if they are only getting a new set.

I'm told that they are not going HD. Its just a new set.

It's kinda dumb to go through all that expense and not go HD, unless they're toying with moving out of the mansion. With the other two big stations in HD, it would be wise for them to follow suit.

Given how WSB abandoned White Columns in 1998 for more room (mainly for radio), I suspect WAGA may build a new studio soon. I hear they have a lot of space at 1551 Briarcliff (WAGA's transmitter is on-site). They could build a studio that has WAGA, FSN South/SportSouth, Fox News' Atlanta Bureau, and other Atlanta-based Fox/News Corp. operations in one building (everything is in different locations now).

Gene McHugh, WAGA's GM was quoted in the AJC last February saying Fox 5 had no money for HD. Is suspect Roger Alies and his hinchmen at corporate are paying for the logo changes.

Looks like on Monday the Conservative bias will begin.

Plus all stations are required to go HD by 2009, so why not just do it now?

No Rea$on in particular.
Fox 5 can't afford going HD now, but they will be that much more financially able in a year from now??? Doesn't make $en$e.

Tv stations ARE NOT required to go HD in 2009. They are required to broadcast only in digital and turn their analog transmitters off. Obviously, many programs will continue to be broadcast in SD, including the news programs from many stations. My question is, have any Fox-owned stations started doing their news in HD, keeping in mind that FOX trailed the other big three in broadcasting any of their regular evening programming in HD.

I emailed Russ Spencer and he said they are not going HD and that it still might be 2 more years before they do.
