Fox 61 News at 11

I haven't seen any promos, but I did see the newscast this week. Erika Arias is the solo anchor. She was the weekend anchor at WFSB-3 until a few weeks ago.

According to a Hartford Courant article (see below), Arias wanted the 11 o'clock seat vacated by Denise D'Ascenzo. WFSB wouldn't give it to her, so she moved over to WTIC.

Brilliant decision, you can be a little fish in the big bowl, or a big fish in the little bowl. She chose the later. She's now anchoring the prime-time news at 11 PM in the same market, just like she wanted. But now she positioned herself right on spot to take on additional responsibilities when FOX61 expands news at Noon, 5 and 6 PM later this year. I think she made a great choice.

I still don't understand how Tribune made all those staff cuts at The Hartford Courant yet can magically afford to put all these newcasts together. It's silly, really. Plus, who printed the article? How is that going to be fair and on the level?

Wasn't Tribune supposed to be required to sell something in Hartford? Are they ramping up TIC's operations to make it more marketable, or sell it off to Fox?

Tribune is ramping up operations in a lot of local markets; San Diego and Sacramento most predominantly. And they're only going to sell off pieces of the business if the FCC says they absolutely have to, or if the pieces in question just don't perform as Sam Zell expects.

Looks like TV news is a growing business and the newspaper industry is shrinking. More live TV news morning, noon and night means they can have fresh video "content" for the Courant's website.

And speaking of the Courant (I know this is off-topic): I don't like the newspaper's new format. I prefer their old tradition format.

I don't like it either. Alot of people don't either. A reporter for JRC's Bristol Press mentioned in his blog he didn't like the new format. And was disappointed that a former colleague of his didn't get more space.

See his blog and the comments about the redesign here: http://bristolnews.blogspot.com/2008/09/courants-redesign.html
