FOX 61 now FOX CT

Yup!
I think it's all to do with the new studio, going HD, etc.
I think it's a pretty gutsy move on their part. While they may not be the most formidable news station in the market, they seems to be sinking a lot of money into the orgaization, despite Tribune bankrupcy.

Channel number? We don't need a stinkin' channel number! We don't need to tell your our stinkin' channel number!

Seriously... Don't be surprised if this happens even more with the dawning of DTV. Doesn't WVIT now refer to themselves as "NBC Connecticut" now?

Don't all the NBC O&O's do that refer to themselves by the Market name I mean? I know WNBC is going by NBC New York and WRC is going by NBC Washington. And they all got the same lame website.

No they still identify themselves by channel number.

To further pile on.....

NO. Only NBC's O & O affiliate in the Bay Area does something like that - and that has to do with the somewhat complicated recent history of KNTV. There's no intrinsic value in touting the channel number in the case of KNTV and it's actually better to brand as NBC Bay Area. It has to do with the whole affiliation flip from KRON and how KNTV was once an ABC affiliate for San Jose (not available in much of the market), then a little-known indie, then a mostly on cable station on channel 11/cable 3 that went as NBC 3 (a problem because NBC 3 is KCRA in the neighboring Sacto market), and so forth. Better to leverage the NBC name in such a case where the O & O has no legacy. But that's an exception and is not the rule.

No, no, you're confusing the websites with the station ID's. WNBC in New York is still NBC 4 on the air. Same for WRC and KNBC. Here in Chicago, WMAQ is NBC 5 and not some generic NBC Chicago.

What can throw you off is that each station's website has gotten rid of the number in an attempt (foolish in my view) to act as some sort of multi-media platform which de-emphasizes the local TV station a bit. The reality is that these NBC corporate websites are far less user-friendly and useful than the former sites were.

I know, hard to believe that today's NBC would take something that worked fine before and morph it into an inferior product that's made from a cheap, cookie-cutter template...but that's what happened here. Go figure.... ::)

By the way, FOX affiliates do have more of a habit of branding in this way. For example, the FOX O & O in Chicago is FOX Chicago and has been for years. Many of their stations brand that way to emphasize the FOX brand. Personally, I think FOX 32 would roll off the tongue better but it's not happening now that they aren't even on 32. Many smaller, non O & O markets do the same sort of branding. Bit of a surprise in CT though, as the WTIC calls and channel 61 DO have somewhat of a legacy.

In Phoenix, they identify as "Fox 10"/

Just to clarify what I meant, "more" of a habit of branding that way wasn't meant to imply that it's something that a majority of FOX affiliates are doing. Just that it's more common to see that sort of branding with FOX stations than with the other major networks. The vast majority of FOX affiliates use the channel number ("Fox 5", "Fox 25," etc.).

But many smaller to mid market FOX affiliates do ID as something like "FOX Charlotte" or "Black Hills FOX" (KEVN Rapid City) or now "FOX CT".

WVIT-DT (NBC) of New Britain, CT (Hartford/New Haven market) dropped their "NBC 30" branding soon after their analog was switched off in June and/or when their newscasts went HD. At last check we still have Channel 3 Eyewitness News (WFSB-DT CBS), NewsChannel 8 (WTNH-DT ABC) and MY-TV 9 (WCTX-DT MY). The last is a cable positioner, since WCTX analog was on channel 59 and their digital is on channel 39.
