Fox and CW both on channel 44 in San Francisco

Someone on the CW message board complained about getting a new converter box and turning to the CW station and ending up with Fox instead.

In fact, the virtual channel for the CW station is 44, but the real channel of the Fox station is 44. This shouldn't be happening.

Someone using the PSIP got mixed up and created a conflict. It has happend in Chicago. WCIU (Channel 26) and WTTW (Channel 11 PBS) do it all the time. The virtual channels go haywire and it takes anywhere to 30 minutes before who ever is in charge of the PSIP gets notified and makes the correction

I'm guessing someone didn't scan and just punched in 44.1 expecting KBHK 44 but getting KTVU 2 as they're on physical UHF 44 (KBHK is on physical 45). Scanning tells the box 44.1 is really on 45 while 44 is calling itself 2.1 because KTVU isn't as stupid as WPVI is. ;-)

And as Mark said the PSIP can fail, wiping out the virtual or "branded" channel for the real channel. This is only worsened when broadcasters jump into other broadcasters analog graves IE taking over their old analog channels but said in a cooler way :p

Accidents happen, and techno geeks like me love every minute of it. :)

I miss my emoticons. :'-(
