KTVU-TV channel 2, licesnsed to Oakland. I think WTIC-TV/DT (FOX) channel 61/D 31 of Hartford, CT had done that before. However, their digital channel has been down for days, so I'll have to get back on that one for you.

Syracuse's WSYT-DT and Rochester's WUHF-DT both do that on 4:3 programming. <P ID="signature">______________

The capability to show that logo at the bottom right is built into the Fox-HD splicer and I believe is controlled by the network, not the local affiliate.

It's up to the affiliate... For instance here only the CBS station puts their logo on the DT all the time. We have the capability to do it, however, the viewers complained so we took it off.

Re: fox and hd - Las Vegas

Here in Las Vegas, the only station that does it is KVVU Fox-5. It seems that they only run their full color logo in the bottom right hand corner of the HD during network programming. During local programming, the logo is within the 4:3 window; the black bars are blank.

On a side note, I wonder how many HD stations "stretch" their SD programming? Here in Vegas, we have only one that does this nasty effect: KTNV ABC-13. I know that several people that have sent emails and made phone calls to the station....but it falls on deaf ears. Every other station in Vegas runs their SD programming 4:3 with black bars on the side. What other markets have stations that stretch their SD content?

I don't think so for Fox. The way I heard it, the network is in total control of the splicer and controls when the logo is shown on the HD feed. This was several months ago, so that might have changed.

I work in the creative services department at a Fox affiliate.

When the network upgraded its DTV delivery system, they had each affiliate send two graphics: a full-color logo with legal ID to be placed at the bottom center of the screen for ten seconds at the top of the hour, and a transparent logo bug to place in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen for the entire duration of Fox entertainment programming (not during sports.) I'm not exactly sure how it works, but It's all controlled at the Fox head end.

I've never seen the legal ID in action, but I think we messed up on our transparent logo, because it extends past the right edge of the screen. The viewer at home only sees "FO...".

This all is very interesting, because if the local affiliate tries to add anything, it would need to decode and reencode the video, thereby losing significant quality.

Is there any way to add weather alerts and little radar graphics? How are EAS messages displayed on top of HD programming?

Actually, I think that's also a network thing. I was having an issue like that and I talked to an engineer at a Fox station and he said that it's just that the logo is placed so near to the edge of the screen that a number of displays cut it off. I'll ask him if it's still like that next time I talk to him.
