FOX Announces New Show Line-up

Here's the release as it was sent to their affiliates. It'll be interesting to see how Shemon and Washington do in the morning slot. Also interesting to see how Andrew does as a lead in for JT. Is the best possible choice FOX could have made for those time slots???

FOX SPORTS RADIO ANNOUNCES NEW WEEKDAY LINEUP



LOS ANGELES, January 6, 2005 – Beginning Monday, Jan. 9, Fox Sports Radio will debut a new program called Out of Bounds on Fox with Shemon and Washington. It will air weekdays from 9 - 12 a.m. ET/6 - 9 a.m. PT. Craig Shemon, an award winning play-by-play announcer, and James Washington, two-time Super Bowl Champion with the Dallas Cowboys, will provide listeners with a combination of sports and pop culture programming. Both previously hosted Fox GameTime Live for the network. The show will replace The Extravaganza on Fox.

In addition, Andrew Siciliano, former Extravaganza on Fox co-host, will move to Fox GameTime Live, weekdays from 7 - 10 p.m. ET/4 - 7 a.m. PT. No stranger to the spotlight, Siciliano also serves as co-host of FSN's "Ultimate Fantasy Football" and anchor of DirecTV's NFL Sunday Ticket “Red Zone Channel.” As host of Fox GameTime Live, Siciliano will interview newsmakers in sports and provide up-to-the-minute news, scores and highlights.

so this was was shemon/j-dubb's big announcement. FSR........still thrashing about after over a year. i still listen to bruno. where is van earl these days?

I think a lot more station's (Clear Channel) are going to follow WNDE in Indy's lead and pick up Bruno. I think Tony is looking at 10+ major cities in the next few months after already picking up Phoenix last week. If you're SNR, do you consider Scott Ferrell now?

Ferrell on FOX

I'm his biggest fan- but listening to his program the other day- and I have to tell you that Ferrell needs to do something other than just pick games.

I realize he's on at difficult hours. You could tell he still has it- he had some lively banter with his producer and such. And picking games was always in his mix.

But Ferrall is at his best when he's funny- and it's tough to do that when you're saying "I like the Steelers over the Bengals."

I said the exact same thing in a post here a couple of months ago. The incessant handicapping banter is very tiresome...and I'm a regular sports gambler myself.

ferrall will still be doing his weekend shows..sat from 6-9am...sun from 9-11 and a saturday night show from 8-12...all eastern time...i think ferrall thought he was going to get that morning slot....i would like to hear him on a daily basis....i wonder if any of the other hosts are coming near to the end of their contracts...if ferrall stays for the weekends and fill-ins then he might be considered again in the future...i wonder what exactly put them off of him...he's been outstanding the last few weeks...at least i thought so... he does talk alot about the picks but people call up and ask for it all of the time and they email his yahoo site also asking for picks....anyway im glad to hear what i can hear of him at this time...i went out and got xm just so i could hear him...so i hope he stays with fox for awhile or maybe xm will pick him up...

Could this possbily be a reaction to complaints from affiliates about the raucous content of Shemon and Washington's programs? Moving S & W to West Coast Morning Drive (where their shtick will most likely play better) also tucks them conveniently away from stations where listeners have been complaining, as most of these are in parts of the country where local programming is heard during that time period.

And, it sounds like Siciliano will return GameTime Live to a more solid sports information program with interviews, updates, scores, and highlights, which has also been requested by the same affiliates and listeners.

I agree! At what point in his life did someone say he had a great radio voice? His info may be good-I don't know. I can't bear to listen.

I was hoping FSR would reinstate the Ferrall on the Bench show just like it was heard back in the syndication days. I think Ferrall is at his best when you mix rapid fire phones, his picks, heavy metal music, pop culture topics all into one show. I personally enjoy Ferrall and really think his style would blow up at any of the Free FMs that CBS has launched this month.

As far as the voice- MY GOD- was Howard Cosell a hack, too?

An open mind does not listen to the voice but rather the content that comes from it.

Here's the fact about Scott Ferrall. He's a somebody in this business. I just mention his name and he's got people writing in talking about him. It happens every time I make a post about him.

You don't get that kind of reaction with even a Mike and the Mad Dog. You don't get it with "The Two Live Stews."

You get it with Ferrall.

Ferrall gets a bunch of crap laid on him he shouldn't have. Has he bounced around a lot- yes- but that's the nature of the business. Some of it was advancing up the radio totem pole. Some of it was his own damn fault. Some of it wasn't.

I loved "The Bench" too. I remember it was the first time I had ever heard "Hard as a Rock" played- and I'm a big AC/DC fan. Ferrall had it on even before the rock stations did.

I think such a program could be revived and revived well- but maybe a few tweaks. I'm not sure the modern metal scene is all that good- and certainly not for background music. I think as time goes by you can mix a bit- Big and Rich with the old Metallica- for instance. Loud, fast, and hard is the key. Some of todays metal only fits the loud and hard standard.

Hockey talk. He was the only guy who did it. He made it seem so mainstream. Play to your base here. If people would gravitate to Jody McDonald for horse racing talk they'll certainly gravitate to Ferrall for hockey.

Getting the calls he once did might be a problem but it might work, too. In 1995, for instance, there was no 24-7 ESPN network to build a station around and no FOX and Sporting News. There was SportsFanRadio Network- but it was almost like Air America- the stations it was on were all low power AMs and your town probably didn't have an affiliate- and Prime- which- well- the station here that carried it is now broadcasting an Air America show so you know about how good it was.

In other words- Ferrall- on a 50,000 watter that you could listen to from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.- pre-internet- that was the THING!!!! If you wanted to call a sports talk show- he was it at that time.

I think it would work revived as a FOX morning gig- or my own personal hope that he would come to Pittsburgh and shake things up here (which isn't likely- but hey). His personality is still there and it will draw people out to call.

However, when I called him on this past summer he kept me on over a break to talk Pitt football. It was a good conversation but in the old days he would never have kept me on that long.

Still, in this case, is the change all bad?

Actually, you do get it with the Stews(not sure if you ever check the ATL board): mainly b/c people resent them for being successful----kinda similiar to Scotty F....only people also have an unspoken race issue with the Stews as well; with Scotty they just hate on a nonstandard guy who is able to get jobs and do his thing.

ferrall's show on the FM talker here in ATL was a complete bust btw. He needs focus and I think that's why hes best doing sports even if I think he personally kinda hates being pigeonholed. The freedom of a more open ended format is krytonite for Scotty despite his talent.

I'm going to stick with The Stews. Maybe you get the conversation about them in Atlanta- but you won't nationwide (primarily because they are not nationwide).

You have to remember the market. In Atlanta- they work. In Augusta- they wouldn't. In Pittsburgh- they wouldn't. In any town that doesn't have a large black population- they would not work unless they changed their format.

What they are doing is playing to a base- just the way Ferrall did circa 1995. Now, his base was basically Headbangers Ball refugees who liked sports just the way hip-hop fans gravitate to the Stews.

Know what? There are tons of us BOTH out there.

I will say this. I think it's unfair to brand Ferrall as less of a hot commodity because his recent show in Atlanta failed. Heck, it got him some national gigs on FOX- just the way WCNN (were those the call letters) paved his way to national prominence in the mid 90s.

To my knowledge- the Stews have yet to go national.

After all, that audience is already satisfied. The country CAN turn to "The Best Damn Sports Talk Show- Period" if they want.

But where can I go if I want the "Rock and Roll" culture reflected in my sportscasts?

It's still Ferrall, plain and simple.

Amen Brother! I take out some of my old Ferrall tapes every so often just to feel the energy he had on the radio!! I am looking into buying a device so I can transfer all my airchecks from tapes to cd this year. Possibly once I do that, I can load some Ferrall up and share the energy that was Ferrall on the Bench! I remmeber staying up late when I lived in buffalo,ny and tuning to wmvp or wfan (whatever came in clearer at night) to catch the show. I still say if CBS radio were smart they would snag Ferrall form FSR and lock him in to nights on their Free Fm stations. He would get clearance in some of the biggest markets right off the bat.

Don't get it wrong--I actually like Ferrall a lot and wish he would get a shot at being the morning guy on FSR----he is better than Bruno on SNR, is MUCH better than the bag of hacks they have now IMHO, and would give the network a great identity.

As to the Stews: I am white and dont really listen to hiphop at all but I find them highly entertaining.

And I believe they go national in the next couple weeks on this new black radio network so I guess we'll see how it plays in other cities. In case you havent noticed, this hiphop culture thing is sorta popular so it might play.....
