Fox BCS Coverage

Well we got our first taste of Fox's BCS coverage tonight with the Tostio's Fiesta Bowl. I was just wondering what everyone's opinion was on the coverage. I for one thought the guys in the booth did well for their first time. Davis and Alverez seemed much better than when they were in the studio for the selection show last month. What is everyone elses impression of Fox's first effort.

I think the game spoke for itself. FOX couldn't have asked for anything better on their madien BCS voyage. Hey, there's no better victory celebration then an on-the-spot marriage proposal, yes? (For those who missed it, a Boise State player proposed to his cheerleader girlfriend on the sidelines just minutes after the amazing 43-42 win over Oklahoma)

Somewhere FSN's (Fox Sports Net) Barry Tompkins and Petros Papadakis have to be scratching their heads...Theyve handled the bulk of the FSN National College Football Telecasts for years....and they give way to a brand new team. (Less scratching but still so are Joel Myers and Steve Physioc who handled other pac 10 and big 12 games)

Thom Brennaman is an excellent baseball announcer...but his delivery is way too deliberate for the twenty first century college football.

Barry Alvarez is there for fun only, as hes busy running the athletic department at U of Wisconsin...too bad they lost once and had a cream puff schedule outside the big 10..otherwise they may have had a shot at becoming the first Div 1 school to win Football, Mens and Womens hockey titles in the same season.

Great game..ok delivery...Will not be better than a Brad Nessler or Brent Musberger lead team from ABC>...

These are national games, so they need nationally-known broadcasters, which none of these guys are.

Physioc is probably the best-known since he does Pac-10 games that get some national exposure, plus he's the voice of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Azusa, and Cucamonga. He's not a national figure but he is an LA figure and that should count for something with the advertisers, but Brennaman is better-known nationwide, even if it is mostly for baseball. And, Physioc is a much better play-caller than Brennaman.

Booooyyyyyyy, oh, boooooyyyyyyy! ;D Like I said above. Fox needs their top guys to do these games, not regional broadcasters no matter how good they are. They probably would have gone with Joe Buck & Troy Aikman if they didn't have NFL committments. Brennaman is their #2 baseball guy and now their #1 college football man. He's a nationally known figure, for better or worse.

And, having been forced to listen to him on Diamondbacks' games for the past 9 years, I think he's gone down the tubes as far as calling baseball. Folks in Cincy are in for a -uh- treat.

I don't think Alvarez has been that bad, but I think he's there to be a Madden-type guy - a personality rather than a serious game analyst.

Nessler's good but Burnt Hamburger's day is long gone.

um...Barry Tompkins has been around for three decades....did boxing and football for ESPN in the early days...also visual in several movies playing himself ...and better than Thom on football hands down...while FSN after October has a bit of trouble clearing their Pac 10 games nationally, due to regional NBA and NHL coverage, hes far better known up and down the dial than Thom.....

now after last nights sugar bowl...I have to admit...I miss Terry Bradshaw in the booth. He was spot on, predicting numerous plays last night, and was never over the top. Howie Long was stride for stride with him..

It might not be a bad idea for FOX to reverse this seasons roles in the NFL..instead of taking the pre game show on the road...send Terry and Howie as analysts for a couple of games....

Too many close-ups of the crowd. Show me what's on the field, not what's in the stands. Fox does the same thing with their baseball playoff coverage.

just horrible, imho

my bet is they're hiring local trucks. the tuesday night bowl game audio was totally terrible- the guys in the truck had no clue how to mix. camera shots? often had nothing to do with the announcer dialogue..............they'd call a penalty and instead of showing the play again they'd have their camera on some sign in the stands that had fox on it. and the announcers (at least tue night).........terry donahue was worthles, the pbp guy (can't remember his name) was minor-league-thank goodness pat hayden was there to at least make the attempt to save the 2nd half

last night, much of the same but the audio was somewhat better and they had a more major league annoucing crew

still.......over all, a D+

Thanks for building the case for using the FSN crews...who cover dozens of college football games from August through November...even FCS, using the schools radio play by play networks for audio, and far fewer camera angles for their Big 12 mid card games, looked better than some of those shots...


Kind of ironic. ESPN does everything it can to bury ABC Sports...while FOXs acknowledgement of FSN is akin to that of a red headed stepchild....

Then how do the regional guys become national guys? Where do the national guys come from?

I am very surprised with Fox. They are usually pretty good at promoting their other properties during big events like this. Of course 24, American Idol, and the NFL playoffs were heavily promoted. But where were the NASCAR plugs with the Daytona 500 nearly a month away?

sucked again last nite in the bcs champ'ship game......................charles davis is always solid but the coin-toss orchestation was poorly
choreographed, terrible camera shots in the wrong place @ the wrong time. during the nat'l anthem, fox's field mic went dead for 6-7 seconds
