This morning, I saw a promo on the Fox Business Network for the program "Stossel", which airs at 8pm (ET).

Included in the promo is a segment in which the announcer says "Uncle Sam stealing our independence?"

However, when those words appear on the screen, the word "independence" is spelled incorrectly...as shown on the following screen shot:

I've seen this word spelled incorrectly in casual conversation (such as on these message boards), which is somewhat acceptable (I guess). But I just think it's ridiculous that a nationally distributed cable/satellite network, owned by one of the world's biggest entertainment companies, could allow this to happen.

Oh man, that's just ridiculous! The issue of misspelled words on chyron has been with us for a long time, but it's become increasingly prevalent in recent years. However, until now, I've never seen one on a promo! Very embarrassing.

And, before any of the Fox-bashers come out of their caves, I'd like to point out that misspelled words show up now on every major news network. It's a function of our educational system, too few people doing too much work for too little pay and too little oversight.

Here's another grammar lesson for you Fox Business viewers: Next time you watch "Imus," take a close look at the rotating text screen behind Charles McCord. One of the words "morning" has an extra I thrown in, as in "morining." I can't believe the show has been on as long as it has been without a spellchecker at Fox Command not catching this mistake!

It absolutely is. That's why I tried to discourage the inevitable Fox bashing - because this is a bigger problem of systemic incompetence than just one station or company. It's happening everywhere, particularly at local stations.

Yeah, really...trying to beat CNBC. The nerve! Remember when Fox had the nerve to start a new cable news network to try to beat CNN? That sure was a failure.

And it all started in the 80s when they started a 4th entertainment network to try to compete with the Big 3. Another failure...they're still way behind NBC in the ratings, aren't they?

Good one. You forgot to add "people naive enough to believe that they can get useful stock tips from TV shows." If you watch any of these business shows / networks for investment advice (CNBC included), you deserve everything that's coming to you.

Yup, saw a chyron-type promo not too long ago during CBS's The Young and the Restless for "Crminal Minds"

HD makes 'em stand out like a sore thumb.

Good one. You forgot to add "people naive enough to believe that they can get useful stock tips from TV shows." If you watch any of these business shows / networks for investment advice (CNBC included), you deserve everything that's coming to you.

Clearly, YOU don't watch much of what's on FBC because that's not what most of the content is. It's more business related news and reporting geared toward the effects that news events will have on certain business sectors. You're confusing it with the evening shows in CNBC. Dave Ramsey doesn't take the same approach as Cramer.

My impression is that you got most of your info on this from watching an episode of King of The Hill that featured a Cramer-esque character who Bill listened to and lost all his money. Better to watch a channel for a while before blindly making criticisms of it.

Any channel carrying DON IMUS in the morning loses any credibility in my book. Even if I'm not interested in Business or Stocks. And Dave Ramsey's show is a bore.

Look, I'm not a fan of either of them (particularly not Imus). But both have a following, particularly Ramsey - who seems to be really popular in the western and southern US....based on all the radio show clearances he has there.

Though I am not a fan of either of them, I am less a fan of unqualified criticisms that are clearly based more on preconceived notions than on actually viewing the content.
