Fox Continues Daytona 500 Snoozefest

My least favorite network for sports events of any kind continues to be Fox. Like circus barkers of old, Fox apparently believes in hellish amounts of hype and special effects add to the excitement and anticipation of the event itself. It does not. Neither do insipidly stupid remarks like the breathlessly delivered "The drivers look almost like superheroes as they strap into their cars." by Fox's Chris Myers.

Oh for the days of Ken Squier and Ned Jarrett.

.......He actually *said that* on the air?

It wasn't as bad as it sounds.

I don't get what is so bad about Fox's presentation of NASCAR. Then again, I'm only in my 20s. Maybe that's just Fox meeting their ultimate marketing goal.

I think FOX far outclasses TNT coverage of NASCAR. That said, Erin Andrews brings NOTHING to the show. She obviously knows nothing about the sport. But I'm a huge fan of DW, Mike, Larry and all the other folks on the race and pre-race coverage.

If ESPN had been telecasting the 500, you would have had Rusty Wallace cheerleading for Danica, which would have been at least as annoying as Digger (the groundhog? that FOX uses as their NASCAR mascot)

Erin Andrews is so out of place that it's awkward. She belongs in a football stadium. But, I guess she brings eye candy and that's all they want (it's also what 50 Cent wanted).

BTW Mr. Squire can be heard every Saturday morning on one of his own radio stations, WDEV, Waterbury, VT. He does a one hour (or so) program called "Music To Go To The Dump By" which has rightfully attained near-legendary status for its seriously tongue-in-cheek humor. The program is streamed live for us flatlanders.

Would that have been any different than Darrell Waltrip cheerleading for Danica (multiple times from pre-race show through the finish) and that really annoying "boogity, boogity, boogity, let's go racin' boys".

Well, at least he can't say "boys" any longer.

I'm still in my 20s, too (albeit not for much longer.)

Let's just say that once you discover feeds, you'll never go back to watching sport on network television.

Yup. One of the really great benefits of the old C/Ku band days. The "hot mic" can really be entertaining. It doesn't take away the commercial time-outs or the inane announcer comments or the never-ending pre and post-race talkathons though.

Actually it's still possible to find feeds on C/Ku these days, since most of them go out in clear DVB. They're just a bit harder to find now because of how much more saturated the birds have become since DVB and multiplexing came into wide use. (Lyngsat's a good site to find out what is where.) But they're most certainly there. Having a motorised dish also can help.

On the NBC NHL feed I observed several years ago they didn't have the "talkathons" or the commercial spaces, but it did have the occasional "instant replay". I like that they don't have the irritating announcer chatter (just the ambient noise of the stadium/track/whatever, which sounds really neat on a stereo receiver) or superimposed computer graphics all over, but I suppose it probably depends on the particular network's production methods.

In Squier and Jarretts day there were no Chris Myers, or even pre-race shows. You had about ten minutes of warm up, the engines were fired and off they went. I still like Joy, Reynolds and DW. I simply tune in when the engines fire.

I've heard him say "let's go racin', boys AND lady" at the start of a race once. Brutal.
