BBC's Saturday night live sensation "Strictly Come Dancing" is
actually a revival of the old "Come Dancing"(1950-1995). SCD returned
the ballroom dancing to BBC last year and became a huge hit across
the Pond. SCD revived BBC's Saturday night schedule which was up until
that point was being dominated by Simon Cowell's(yes, it's the
same SiCO who is the judge on American IDol) talent show
"The X-Factor" on ITV. BBC has already spun off SCD into a new show called
"Strictly Dance Fever" which just ended its 11-week run last Saturday.
(In SDF, couples learned a brand new dance style for each week's show.)
After a huge success with S.C.D. in its first season,
BBC Worldwide had sold the rights in different countries.
In US, it was picked up by ABC earlier this spring. BBC Entertainment
is actually producing the Hollywood version(the entire production crew and
the EP's are Brits). Looks like DWTS will be back on ABC after the
summer run because the Alphabet hit one out of the park with the
ratings.
As for the Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance"(working title was "Dance Nation").
The show has been in development for over a year. It's a co-production
of Dick Clark Prodcutions and American Idol's producers Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe. When originally announced last summer, the plans called for the revival of DC's American Bandstand. The format will have some of the elements of the original AB show but the show will focus on individual and partnered dancers who would square off in a live show each week. Style of dance would change each week as well, with contestants(all amateurs) dancing a new style to popular music.
