Fox, ESPN Tie Up Pac-12 Rights For $3 Billion

http://www.broadcastingcable.com/ar...ie_Up_Pac_12_Rights_For_3_Billion_Reports.php

ESPN and Fox will make it official tomorrow: They have scored a media rights deal with the soon to be Pac-12 conference.
The parties have scheduled a noon (ET) press conference during which they will announce a 12-year agreement, which Sports Business Daily pegs at some $3 billion, encompassing football, basketball and Olympic sports.

Big ESPN strikes again! NBC/Versus were outbid, according to Dick Ebersol.

Pac-12 is planning to start their own network. I read something about the Pac-12 wanting to expand its presence into Asia, which they are definitely positioned to do. Btw, I think Newscorp and ESPN are partners in the ESPN Star Sports channel in Singapore. That's probably what partly factored in this new deal.

The deal will start during the 2012-13 academic season.

"Academic season"
Nice one! :D

Most scholar-athletes are not dumb jocks.
It wasn't a personal indictment against scholars or athletes. Don't take it personal.
The story wasn't about athletes and players, it was about the Pac-12 and ESPN. The statement was more of an indictment against the conferences, the NCAA and ESPN.
They throw in "academic" as a complete afterthought in "college sports."
The Pac-12 is not getting $3 billion for ESPN to televise study halls and tests and lab experiments. Unless they hold one on the morning of GameDay (Saturday, Monday, Thursday, whenever it might be that week).

So NBC/Versus was outbidded. Did CBS Sports Network make a deal at all?

As for this new deal does that mean for FOX Broadcast or FOX Sports Net or both?

10 regular-season football games a year will be on Fox and ABC, with nationwide coverage. The Mercury-News article doesn't say how many are on Fox and how many are on ABC, but the total is 10. How many are in prime time also isn't mentioned (they call it a "substantial commitment" without giving an exact number), but my guess is that most, if not all prime-time games will be on ABC.

34 games will be on cable (ESPN/2/U, FSN, and FX). The remaining games (36 total) will be on the new Pac-12 Network, 3 per week.

A Friday night timeslot for the championship game is interesting. Friday nights aren't as dead as Saturday nights are for TV viewing. With that said, though, Saturday nights are probably a little better for overall sports audiences--but that's where the SEC and ACC already live.

Pity the poor Mid-American Conference, who's had its football championship game on Friday nights (mostly at the behest of ESPN TV) for several years now.
