Fox Fires Steve Lyons After Insensitive Comment

Well it still doesn't explain why they haven't fired the king of insensitve Tim McCarver yet.

I agree it's stupid to fire somebody for making what was to be a humorous comment

but that's life in the media world.

Personally they should've fired both Lou Pinella.

He was AWFUL during the ALCS:(

He should be blamed for Lyons not having a job.

Then again I expect him to resurface at either ESPN or join

the new TBS Sunday Afternoon Game Package next year.

He's one of the best athletes turn broadcasters I've ever seen or heard on

TV & Radio.

That's right - his brand of humor would certainly fly down in Atlanta, wouldn't it?

We Americans have become a thin-skinned bunch. Oh, be careful and not say anything that might offend somebody, somewhere. It will cost you! Political correctness bites.

Hi everyone:

I wonder if FOX Sports even consulted with Lou Pinella on the matter. From the looks and sound of it, it doesn't even appear that he was even offended by it.

Am I the only one who sees that?

Cheers :D

Pinella won't be around too much longer. He's going to be with the Chicago Cubs now.

I saw the incident with the special eyeware. I didn't hear anything insensitve said and I wondered what it was too. Maybe the director shouldn't have shown it.

Whether peoples sensitivites were offended is up to the individual; The fun of sports is the OCCASIONAL off the wall or rude remarks.

That's th last straw with Fox Sports. I will not bother to watch their broadcasts any longer. Rehire Lyons and maybe I'll come back If you want to increase your chances make the score graphics easier for people to read.

Because reinforcing stereotypes based upon race/ethnicity is great fun...especially when they have absolutely NOTHING to do with what's being talked about.

No, lame, dumb attempts at humor bites. Like the documented junk from Lyons (this isn't his first time his mouth has gotten him in trouble).

You complain about 'political correctness' gone bad--I complain about forgetting a basic courtesy lesson everyone should have learned from elementary school: If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.

Anybody care to tell me how Lyons' comments carried any relation toward the game he was covering/commenting on? Go ahead...I'll wait.

That's just plain ridiculous...this has NOTHING to do with YOUR dislike of McCarver, who (I'll remind you again) is one of the better baseball analysts on television. Has been for over 20 years, so he must be doing something right. If you want to complain about Fox's baseball coverage, complain about their shameless promotion of the BCS -- which doesn't start for a few more months -- during the BASEBALL POSTSEASON. Complain about the annoying bells and whistles that visually pollutes the airwaves. Stay on topic, and keep your personal hatred of McCarver to yourself.

On topic, I agree that Fox jumped the gun when they fired Lyons, whom I liked to a degree. But Fox knew what they were getting with him. Let's not forget he was suspended for making what were percieved as anti-Semitic remarks about Shawn Green's abservance of Yom Kippur several years ago. He should have been careful with his words, but Fox hired him to be just what he was: baseball's answer to Terry Bradshaw.
