Fox Gets A Station in The Bay Area

Their website should soon change. The name will be something like "myfoxoakland" or "myfoxsanfrancisco" or something similar.
The FOX O&Os have very similar websites. The website Servers are in New Jersey. The individual stations have only minimal control of their websites.

How about "MyFoxBayArea"?

Here's a not-so-stray thought: MyNetworkTV is on KRON/4 now. Since that network ... er, syndicated programming provider is owned by Fox and always runs on the second station of a duopoly in markets that have same, channel 4 will once again find itself scrambling for prime-time programming when the MNT contract expires. (Anyone know when that is?)

Did a bit of research and there's no advantage to them moving to Channel 4.

In fact it would probably hurt them in the South Bay since they've got a boast for "channel 2" on Monument Peak. I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I doubt that Fox's intent in purchasing KTVU was to move their programming to KRON. And I don't get why that particular branding has any kind of advantage.

My point is that, whenever the MNT contract with KRON ends, expect KICU to become "My 36".

Well - sort of. I haven't watched KTVU in awhile, but I went to their website. They appear to be still using the original KTVU '2 in a circle' logo, instead of the normal - rather bland - Fox number logos. All they did was put "Fox" in front of it.That logo way predates KTVU's affiliation with Fox, and I would think - have historical cachet with Bay Area viewers - kind of like the circle 7 at KABC, KGO-TV, WABC, etc. To dump it would be stupid. It's also just a nice design.

Nope, there would be absolutely no advantage in doing that. KTVU on channel 2 is an extremely strong station -- one of the top Fox stations in the country, as well as a very successful competitor in the Bay Area. In contrast, KRON on channel 4 is by far the weakest of the five legacy VHF stations (yes, I know that most of them aren't actually transmitting on VHF frequencies anymore, but most viewers don't know the physical channel, just the channel the stations ID as).

So going from channel 2 to channel 4 could only be a negative, even if they transferred the KTVU identity and programming over to channel 4. There's just no benefit in doing this.

Also - people are creatures of habit. i dumped Comcast for DirecTV over a year ago, and I still tend to go to 3 for KNTV, 12 for KBCW and 13 for 20. DirecTV puts these channels on their same number as their broadcast number. (What a concept!) In fact, I'd bet that Comcast hasn't moved these channels onto their same number designation - the current channel line-up is an anachronism from 40 years ago, pre-tuner boxes - precisely because people are creatures of habit and would complain if they suddenly had to find KBCW on Comcast channel 44. And those stations prefer the lower dial positions, even today.

But the point is - other than the nice alliterative sound of Fox Four, there are just no practical reasons to change things.

Even more importantly, no owner, no network, no program provider has any reason or any obligation to try to bolster channel 4, beyond its value in the market. It's various owners, over the years, at various crossroads, made decisions. Some were good, some not.
