Fox goes into the Pickers Business

Seems to be the way everything is done these days. Rather than come up with something inventive, new and good, people just take the easy route and copy what they see.

Why are 3 shows like Lifetime Picker Sisters and Discovery's Dirty Money and now Fox's Buried Treasure ripping off from History's American Pickers.

Actually it's only 2 shows that are ripping off from History's American Pickers. Lifetime can have Picker Sisters because Lifetime and History Channel are corporate cousins. Hearst owns a percentage of both A&E Networks (which besides A&E includes History and History International) and Lifetime Networks (Lifetime, Lifetime Movie Network, etc). This is why Lifetime has been showing reruns of American Pickers and Pawn Stars from History Channel. Last summer Lifetime was briefly airing reruns of the A&E reality show Airline the show about Southwest Airlines from a couple years ago.

The 3 shows are still ripping off the original.
One network might be "not ripping off" the original because they are co-owned, if that's how you want to couch it.
But still, there's 3 shows that are derivations of the original, and therefore not that original in themselves, so they're "ripping off" American Pickers.

Don't the other networks get that they can't beat the original.

I think the professor I had for Television Programming at Syracuse said it best... "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." It is the same reason we have Storage Wars and Storage Hunters ripping off from Spike's Auction Hunters, if it works we are going to try and imitate it hoping fans of the original show will watch ours too.

It has been going on since tv started:
cop shows/ family sitcoms/ courtroom dramas/ monster family sitcoms/ variety shows/ detective shows/ love shows/ lawyer shows/ more cop shows/ hospital dramas/ family sitcoms/ comedians doing sitcoms/ more hospital dramas/ after-the-fact crime investigation shows/ gross-out shows/ competition 'reality' shows/ housewives shows/ karaoke variations/ etc.

"There is nothing new under the sun" except the nuances and variations on old themes....
