Fox might be getting into daytime

British-style soaps will bomb even worse than Mexican-style soaps if what I've seen of Coronation Street and EastEnders is any indication. IMO, they make Wicked, Wicked Games (please tell me that Yahoo's listings lie and My didn't slap an E/I bug on that show) look like high art. They should stick to the syndicated talk or come up with a game show that could grab some disaffected TPIR fans post-Bob.

I agree; in comparing MNTV's telenovelas with Fox's British-style soaps, MNTV's attempt had a chance, as many Americans had access to Univision and/or Telemundo. As for the British soaps, it's all but untested territory. There were even attempts to import the real ones from the UK (the aforementioned Corrie and EastEnders), and even similar soaps from Australia (Prisoner Cell Block H and Neighbours) -- they all flopped in the states.

If Fox gets into daytime, I'd rather see them stay away from soaps, trash talk, and courtroom shows, but I know that it isn't very likely. I'd like to see daytime TV get back to having more game shows, but I doubt if that will happen.

Same here, actually I'd like to see the mixture of game shows, soaps, and non-trash talk shows the nets had back in the day. However, the game show era is over, and now that NBC has recently cancelled a soap and is making plans to cancel their other one by the contract's end in 2009, daytime will be trashier than ever since its so cheap to make a talk show or judge show.

Agreed on both accounts...British soaps are far different from American soaps. Where as American soaps are a mixture of reality, fantasy, absurdity etc. British soaps are 100% realism, which never really flies this side of the Atlantic.

That's funny. Try telling THAT to the heads of PBS stations. They keep getting SWAMPED by people who WANT 'EM.

That said, what News Corp. needs to do to save face with MyNetwork TV is put them on there in the daytime. Don't put 'em on the FOX Network.

Besides, why should they import stuff televised on OTHER British channels? Why not import shows from their own Sky Network instead?

Just my opinion...

Cheers :D

The game show era is over? Gee....Could of fooled me. Deal Or No Deal seems to be getting some decent ratings these days. And I just bet that IF NBC gave it half a chance in Daytime, it'd probably do pretty good there too (Especially with Bob Barker retiring).

Naah. They'll just turn the timeslots back over to the local stations, who will in turn go after the cheap courtroom and sleazy talk shows.

Now I will agree here. You probably don't see too many people rise from the dead on a British soap.

Then too, IF well produced, a British-style soap just might be the perfect prescription to cure the present day problems of and preserve a future for Daytime TV.

Just my opinion :D

Cheers :D

I want my local PBS station to show Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Mr. Bean, and The Red Green Show (I know it's Canadian, but it's my favorite PBS show! ;D ) NOT British soaps! ::)

They show Monty Python AND The EastEnders, depending on the station of course.

Cheers :D
