Fox News Benefitting From "War" With White House

It might just be a coincidence, but the network dubbed "a research arm of the Republican party" and "not a news station" by advisers in the Obama administration is enjoying a slight surge in its ratings ever since the White House took off the gloves against the cable news outlet, whose coverage usually is critical of President Obama.

Well...yeah...of course. Whenever the political pendulum swings, media representing the "opposition" is bound to gain popularity, as people with similar political views find an outlet for discussion, and to vent their frustration.

It's no coincidence that right-wing talk radio expanded exponentially during the Clinton administration. On the flip side, I don't think MSNBC's conversion to the news outlet with left-leaning commentary would have gained as much traction if they hadn't had George W. Bush to kick around. Ditto Huffington Post, and the growth in popularity of the Daily Show, Colbert, etc.

Of course they are. Whenever the Leader of the Free World seems to ranks them as a problem worthy of his attention on a plane with the Global Economic Crisis, the Iran Nuke Crisis, Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Health Care and Spiraling Unemployment, people are going to want to tune in and see what all the fuss is about.

What is almost never mentioned when this subject of "Fox News ratings are up" conversation rears it ugly head, is that it is likely an increase in viewership by like-minded individuals who already lean to the conservative side of the political spectrum. Chances are, if you are watching Fox News or MSNBC, your mind is already made up.

So more people are watching, but have minds really being changed or even challenged? Journalism is a sad state of affairs in 2009.

We found out what was going on in the days before cable news and C-Span, we would find out what was going on if we had none of them today, including Fox.

We would also read every word in legislation if we were so inclined, although I must admit that I am so far only on grandfathering at Page 91, of the newly unveiled House health care legislation. I have not even seen Fox News today yet.

The difference is that we would see it in print and read it if it were not on TV, the radio or the Internet.

You should have watched them yesterday, they brought in "world's fastest speed reader" Howard Berg to read the new 2,000-page health care bill within 45 minutes!

I would like to see the live closed-captioning on that.
