Fox News Going, Going, Gone... Sirius Passes 3 Million

Sirius won't notice the handful of subscribers that may actually follow through with their threat to switch to XM because of the impending termination of Fox News programming on the service. Sirius just passed the 3,000,000 subscriber mark and the demand for Howard Stern among new subscribers has been so tremendous, they're now having problems with their customer service group in handling activation and service question calls on a timely basis.

Sirius' deal with Stern will be the biggest boon to the service it has ever seen, as a substantial Christmas sales campaign appears to have been successful for the company.

Sirius has fielded some complaint calls about Fox News but feels the terms Fox attempted to impose on Sirius to carry additional Fox programming at a substantially higher cost "was not a good fit" for the company. Ultimately, it will not amount to anything for Sirius' overall subscriber numbers with the Stern growth.

XM will launch Fox News Radio the first week of January for those who absolutely must have Fox radio shows in addition to the TV soundtrack channel which will also continue on XM.

I will have to say that in Rochester, NY, almost all of the Sirius radios are sold out of major electronic department stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, Radio Shack), and the only ones that remain are the Audiovox models. I think this is a huge testament to the power of Howard Stern. Stern was popular in Rochester, but his numbers didn't indicate that he would create such a local sales spike in radios/service.

Regarding FoxNews, I could really care less. I think that the TV soundtrack channels are lame anyway (ie. ESPN NEWS)

You can't get what SIRIUS puts out for free.

You can't find commercial free music for free.
You can't find the variety of music they have for free.
You can't find "niche" programming like Stern or OutQ for free.
You can't find an old time radio channel for free.
At least in your car, you can't find the CBC or the BBC World Service for free.

I'm sorry, but no matter how many times I've heard and/or read the above comment, it still comes across to me as simply ignorant and a terrible argument. People are paying for it because terrestrial ("free") radio has gone down the toilet...that's the bottomline. It no longer offers anything of entertainment value to the listener. Hell, they really don't cater to the listener anymore. Why do people pay for water when it's "free"? Why do people pay for cable/satellite TV when they can get it "free"? And for kicks, why do people pay for sex when they can get it "free." Why do people pay more money for anything when they can get the same thing or a similar product for a lesser price? They want quality and options...terrestrial radio no longer offers that to the listener. Why do you pay for the Internet when you can go to the library and use it for free? Blah, blah, blah. :)

Terrestrial radio is so bad that they have to give it away for free because no one would pay for it. It's just a matter of time before their advertisers take notice and ad revenue drops for the commercial broadcasters. Maybe then they will attempt to cater more to what the listener wants.

No, but you will be able to get all this in a matter of a couple years - As soon as WiFi radio receivers are made AFFORDABLY and WiFi is free in most parts of the country... I don't think this is as far away as many may think.

just my opinion.

Not exactly true. I have a portable shortwave radio, so CBC and BBC are regular catches. Maybe if you said CBC radio 2 or BBC radio 1, but soon those will be wifi as will any other intenet stream.

Why pay for something you can get for free.... welll there are some ideas here:

1. Some people are sick of radio, and all the same songs over and over, as well as endless commercials
2. Some people want an added choice to FM, as their favorite format may not be on a local FM station (Like me, I have SIRIUS due to their 80s station, as well as their Super Shuffle station)
3. Some people want to hear sports on a constant signal, so they listen on SIRIUS or XM.
4. For Stern, or O&A. That is not available on FM anymore.

Those are just some ideas on why people will pay the 12.95 per month. For me, I like hearing more choices, it compliments FM. And I really don't mind the monthly payment (I payed a year in advance acually, so I am good for a year!)<P ID="signature">______________
