Fox seems to have made some nice improvements in their coverage this year. The HD coverage is excellent, and the highlight interuptions are less intrusive and only shown if there are real plays that need to be seen. I also like bringing some of their pre-game stars into a local game for 10 minutes to comment. Fox seems to be taking a pro-active approach. CBS looks same old, same old. Plus, the Fox announcers seem to be more informed, less partial, and more accurate. Just an opinion here in week 1. (And they mostly got rid of that stupid robot with shoulder pads...that alone earns points with this viewer!). Kudos to Fox for a much better NFL presentation this year.
 
Fox still broadcasts in 720p which, in my opinion, is a major step down from 1080i that is broadcast by CBS. Also, why must they keep changing the Fox Box? It was a fabulous revolutionary innovation when they introduced it many years ago, but they just can't keep playing with it. And I've never been a big fan of their pregame show. It wasn't bad years ago when James Brown hosted it, but now it borders on silliness, as does CBS's pregame show. I much enjoyed the NFL Today back in the 70s along with NBC's version when they went head to head.
 
They seem to be making an awful big deal about broadcasting the games in letterbox to standard def receivers.
Frankly I think that is just simpler for their engineering department. No need to worry about recentering graphics
or panning, etc. I personally don't like it, especially if you are watching on a small portable set.

I've always believed that 720p was better for sports than 1080i, simply because motion is smoother with progressive.

From checking the Fox games yesterday it appears they've backed off a little bit from the full 16x9 graphics philosophy they had tried during the preseason, as I notice the scoreboard in the upper left is once again 4x3 safe, even though other graphics are cut off in SD, and the camera shots are still composed for 16x9.

I've got a feeling that many of the Fox stations, or cable/satellite systems that redistribute them, are not yet using the Active Frame Descriptor digital reference for converting the video into letterboxed SD, so they were probably getting complaints.
 
They changed the FoxBox because

1) Sometimes the size of the letters comes across too small or blurry for non HD signals
2) We are now in a multi-lingual world..and a mostly dumber one. We humans need symbols, not words to describe cities and teams.

Curt Menafee still barely gets by without falling over his words. The halftime shows and The OT are rushed.

What did FOX have last year for NFL? The top line score graphic still but smaller if I am correct. Which was just awful and hard to read. As for NFL graphics I enjoy the score on the bottom as NBC has it along with ESPN. As for CBS they have great graphics also. Centered top score line and bottom NFL score ticker which is very useful, much better then the small top right that fox has with their logo.

I agree. It's bad enough that NFL Network uses a score bug like it. Only difference is the design.

Why can't Fox Sports standardize their graphics whereas it uses the same graphics that FSN uses? At least they take the KISS approach with those.

As for the robot, while I could never figure out why it was there, I thought it looked kinda cute. At least they're not using a Gecko (Can you imagine the Geico Gecko doing sponsor consideration spots during a sports event?). That said, I could see the Geico cavemen doing them though. That'd be a hoot. :D

I much prefer the score bar at the top.

It is for this reason (Along with its design) that I don't much care for NBC's bar (Which I hope they'll change next time they get the Super Bowl) & wish ESPN would move theirs up to the top like it is for all sporting events they cover. I don't mind the MNF logo though.

Just my opinion.....

Curt (who I first became familiar with locally on WNYW/New York) is such a tease. In a "Game Break" during the Packers/Eagles game, he talks up a highlight of Seattle's Mike Williams... who stops at the 1 yard line, "Hasselbeck ran in the touchdown moments later..." Later on, very same game, Curt talked up a Tim Hightower run... again, stopping short of the goal line. I thought the whole point of the "Game Break" feature was to show players scoring touchdowns? I suppose most folks would rather pay $50 a year for that privilege these days...

With that said, Fox did make an improvement with another addition to its airstaff: Mike Pereira, a former NFL referee. Boy, did he come in handy in his first week of work, as he was called upon to comment on the Detroit Lions' late touchdown against the Chicago Bears that would later be reversed and cost them the game. Give CBS time, and they'll eventually hire a counterpart. Maybe NBC, too. Everybody copies each other. That's how things work.
 
now that we are all dumping on Fox, I did notice on last night's ESPN games that their game summary "box"
(actually a strip along the bottom of the screen) was actually covering up and blocking their fancy on-field
graphic that showed the down yardage and the play clock at times!

As one of my former bosses from the Subcontinent used to say, "Too much of technology!" :D

This would be of note if he weren't sitting at the same desk as Terry Bradshaw.

ESPN also has the score graphic in the bottom right corner for baseball.
