Fox Radio

So by now everyone has heard the new combined Fox 96.7 103.1. But am I the only that thinks it kinda sounds like alot like a few other AC stations? I sounds good, but I dont see how the tweaking of the Hot AC format they had to this variety hits (borderline...*gasp* Jack) will help them greatly in the ratings. Maybe a much more drastic change in format would help put Sunrise higher on the map. Maybe exploit a format that is not as avaiable as others in Orange County say like Fox Country or Oldies Fox (no more CBS-FM either.) To me 96.7 covering Port Jervis would do really well as a Country station over there.

Probably never happen...but hey thats what this board is for!

Sunrise wouldn't do an Oldies Fox because they already own two stations that are Oldies, Oldies 1220/1490 WGNYAM/WDLC-AM in Newburgh/Port Jervis.

For accuracy's sake, let's be clear about who "owns" Fox 96.7 and WDLC-AM.

From an earlier post:

"Clear Channel LMA'd WDLC and WTSX. CC turned the stations back to Bob Wein last year. I heard that CC did not want to take advantage of their purchase option. Then, Wein sold the stations. In December, 2004 PJ Radio, LLC took over. PJ Radio is 100% owned by James Morley of Connecticut. I seem to remember postings here with high hopes for local programming under his ownership. WDLC and WTSX did have good flood coverage last September.

WGNY and WGNY-FM are owned by Sunrise Broadcasting Corp. of Newburgh, NY. That company is 100% owned by Joerg Klese.

Looks like WDLC and WTSX are being LMA'd by Sunrise. The two companies are under separate ownership where Sunrise is programming and, no doubt, providing some other services to PJ Radio, LLC."

That was my fault...I was just quickly thinking of some options...but Fox Country??

I stand corrected. For some reason ,I keep thinking that WTSX/WDLC are owned by Sunrise/WGNY. I meant to type that Sunrise progams WGNYAM and WDLCAM as Oldies.

This is substantially correct. But it is my understanding that CC was not permitted to purchase WTSX/WDLC because of their near total dominance of the airwaves in Sussex County. WTSX covers almost all of Sussex County as well as most of Pike County and half of Orange County.

Sounds right to me. I never really considered why CC didn't follow through on the purchase. Market concentration is a logical reason to return the stations to Bob Wein.

The station is sounding good. I am glad that the owners are putting more effort. But, I was thinking the same thing as you. Maybe another format. Not happening I guess. I don't think country would happen because there is Kick 94.3, but then again, that station doesn't come in well in North Jersey or the Port Jervis area.
______________

Kicks 94.3 doesn't get into Newburgh at all... what weak signal there is is knocked out by the religious translator on 94.1. Kicks does not get as far as the Port Jervis market at all... their signal is marginal in some parts of northern Orange County, and that's it. I've often wondered why Cumulus didn't simulcast Kicks on WZAD-97.3, because of all the other AC competition to its Mix format in the area.... WVOS, WSUL, Lite-99.3, WHUD, WGNY and now WTSX, and the country hole. WRWD does have a better signal than Kicks in Orange, but it's not great in many areas.

So a 96.7 and 103.1 Country simulcast would be viable.... and in the many parts of Orange County where New York City signals are received, there is still no country competition.

Being as they just launched Fox 103.1/96.7, which involved a full format change for 96.7, there's no way they'll change to country now. Also, the new country station in Jeffersonville has probably stolen a bit of their thunder.

It would be interesting if an Oldies or Country station started. I know that country did well on 96.7 for many years. Then in the 1990s, they went more towards AC. In 1998, 96.7 switched to oldies as "Fox". The Fox moniker has been used for a long time now. I guess we will see how well "Fox" will do. I have a feeling they may not do well. Is 103.1 cursed?
______________
