Fox Sports Planning To Launch National Channel

Per Bloomberg news story: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-...to-plan-u-s-sports-network-to-rival-espn.html

Darren Rovell tweeted that the working title for the channel is Fox Sports 1: http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_ne...fox-reportedly-starting-channel-to-rival-espn

So far, the Bloomberg article states that Fuel could be the channel to be flipped but John Ourand of Sports Business Journal tweeted that Speed is the one being looked at to be flipped. No word on what happens to Fox Soccer or the regional sports networks.

Here's the write-up from Awful Announcing: http://www.awfulannouncing.com/2012...llenge-espn-with-national-sports-channel.html

We may not know until the end of the year, at the earliest.

They need to bring Fox Scoccer Channel to the lower package its been on the Sports Pack for a long time. How can we get Fox Scoccer Channel to a lower package on DIRECTV? For any soccer fans that wants to see scoccer game beside paying too much on the Sports Pack. Remeber a few years ago alot of ESPN-U fans want to get the channel into the basic package out of the sports package.

Fox Sports sort of did this a few years back with some national "SportsCenter" type programming on the various Fox RSN's, but dropped the idea.

Sounds like Fox Sports 1 is a reaction to NBC Sports Network expanded offerings. Fine with me; ESPN needs to feel the heat of increased competition.

That's interesting! I thought foxsports would have already have a sports channel about time.

If it can finally justify Fuel TV having any purpose beyond being a pretty screensaver of snowboarding and skateboarding, and old UFC fights, they have to try. Outside of G4 and Jewelry TV, Fuel TV has no real reason for existence as most of its target audience isn't watching television all the time, and probably doesn't care enough to pay for it on the sports tier at all.

Notice that plans for a FOX version of ESPN leaked right after Magic Johnson & Co. purchased the Dodgers: FOX's contract with the Dodgers is up next year, and they're about to lose local rights to Lakers games. FOX already struck $3 billion deals with the Angels and Rangers. Any revenue they can get from a "FOX Sports 1" can offset these high money deals with sports teams for broadcast rights...

While it will be nice to see Fuel or Speed replaced (never watch them anyway), the last thing we need is another sports network. I'm a huge sports fan, but all these networks are so watered down with "filler" programming. Most RSN's are unwatchable beyond the local live games at night. Plus you have each professional league with their own network and the same repetitive filler programming. Networks like MLB Network should at least be showing 2 live games per night (1 east coast, 1 west coast) rather than 5+ hours of analysis. But they probably won't even do that because they want more people to subscribe to their expensive MLB Extra Innings package.

Utterly predictable, as now all 3 of their broadcast network competitors have entered this game.

Still trying to figure out for the life of me why anybody would pay extra for Fox Soccer Plus.
Unless you are a huge fan of rugby or the "AAA" level of English soccer, seems like a complete
waste of bandwidth to me.

That is not available on Dish Network (that package). The RSNs do make money even with their boring programming.

For example, FSN South/SportSouth alone has 3 NBA teams, 2 NHL teams, the Braves, Cardinals and/or Reds (depending on where you are) plus SEC and ACC games and their accompanying studio shows. They also have Conference USA.

There are a lot of sports that don't get covered now, but now you might see more covered. Fox Soccer Plus doesn't have much on it. It replaced Setanta Sports.

Now that NBC, CBS and Fox have all decided to enter the national sports network arena, it will be interesting to see how much this drives up the bidding on sports packages, or if it levels off as the broadcast networks stop bidding on all but the biggest sports and events- and allow their corporate cable sibling to bid on sports.

CBS Sports Network isn't exactly a major player in the TV sports world. They mostly just show low-end college games. Verizon Fios doesn't even carry the network in HD so I doubt they think very highly of it. NBC sports seems to have some potential if they can draw more than just some NHL games.

NBA Sports Network doesn't even have a show to go up against Sportscenter yet.
CBS Sports Network has John Heyman know for it's CBS Sports Website and could add more Inside the Sports Shows.
Sporting News Channel to go up against ESPNNEWS but CNNSI didn't make it.
Fuel/Speed can stay and can just make Fox Sports Net it's own Channel.
None of the other RSN'S are availableon Comcast Olathe/MO yet.

NHL/NBA need to send out their own Crews to call like on NBA Fan Night and MLB Network other then Thursday send a crew out to call games like Saturday Nights.

I think we might see a day where its hard to program ESPN2, and ESPNews as we know it is gone. Assuming the triumvirate of NBC, CBS, and Fox each manage to pull some sports rights from the Mouse, what do you replace that with?

It is getting hard now even. ESPN2 has so many outdoors and motorsports shows, and shows more college basketball than it used to. I read mid 90s ESPN schedules, and ESPN didn't have the amount of basketball and studio shows like they do now. They had all the PGA golf, LPGA, the Senior tour (almost always on Friday and Saturday afternoons), plus all the motor sports series.

Now, SportsCenter basically is on a ESPN channel 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. ESPNU does serve a purpose, with all the good games it carries.

Right now, I don't think anyone would be too pleased if their favorite team/league moved from the ESPN networks to any of these upstarts on account of the limited carriage, and especially the limited carriage on basic tiers. CBS/NBC/FOX will need to significantly outbid ESPN to win contract rights.

Plus, ESPN's recent agreements have been for many year terms, preventing CBS/NBC/FOX from taking away those rights for five to ten years.

Err.....Don't you mean NBC Sports Network? The NBA's network is NBA TV

What other RSNs are you talking about? Fox Sports Net is the national group of RSOs that carry Fox Sports programming when they're not doing anything local

Cheers & 73 ;D
