Fox Sports Radio

WWTX 1290 in the Wilmington, Delaware market, has been primarily Fox Sports Radio, with a live/semi-local afternoon show, the PBP for the local minor-league baseball team, and Penn State football, for several years now.

So far, not even a blip in the ratings. There is at least a listener or two, not not enough to notice. This is a far cry from when they aired adult statndards and had respectable ratings.

I'm curious. Are there any markets where Fox Sports does well?

Not really. They have no marquee shows and the only traction they get is nights with JT the Brick in some bigger markets, but late night is not where you build a radio network. FSR has been just a small-time operation since they got cheap and let Tony Bruno go. It's all about profits, not quality product at any of these networks. ESPN has the big affiliates, Fox has stations - but none matter - and Sporting News is a laughingstock which should be off the air asap!

Sports stations as a whole don't garner big ratings, but even the ones that do (at least in big markets) are doing so because of local programming. WEEI Boston is one of the highest-rated (if the not the highest-rated) sports stations in the country and they are an FSR affiliate, but I'd venture a guess that they carry FSR programming late at night and that local programming carries that station. Plus, being the home of the Celtics and Red Sox doesn't hurt either.

Sometimes, in a medium size market like Wilmington, Delaware, being "local" does not even help. Their "local" afternoon host was actually getting some calls one day. The callers, however, were getting on his case for lack of knowledge of Philadelphia area sports. The host had to admit, that he lived in Conn., was broadcasting from there, and had never been in a Philadelphia area stadium! I can't believe WEEI would ever pull a stunt like that and neither would the FAN or WIP. But some stations, being cheap, will try anything, making their product bad.

I would agree that all 3 of the networks are lacking these days. Cowherd to me is the best talker on ESPN, yet he gets shut out in a bunch of big markets, IE: NY, PHILLY, CHICAGO and they air that garbage Tirico show. Cowherd has an opinion, Tirico is all fluff.

JT The Brick is the one host who gets clearance on big stations for FSR and has been around long enough that stations feel comfortable w/ him. There are some other hosts I enjoy on that network like Czaban & Siciliano, but they're not on big stations. Also, they've lost so much over there thru the years its hard to listen to some of their other shows.

Sporting News is a travesty. I always thought they were hokie, but now it's just unlistenable.

I would rather listen to FSR on the Weekends than ESPN.

I would rather have no finger nails pulled out by rusty pliers then listen to any of that drek!

WTEM in Washington did decently with Fox Sports Radio. (Yes, Dan Snyder had ESPN on "Triple X ESPN," three imperceptible suburban signals in the market that allegedly qualified as a station, but) WTEM (still) beat "Triple X" by a significant margin.

So what happened? Snyder bought WTEM and it's two AM sister stations, and forced a merger between WTEM and "Triple X." Thus, Fox Sports Radio got shut out of the market completely.

Oh, and "Triple X's" lone local personality, John Riggins, did his now-cancelled show via LAN from New York. Smart.

WEEI did have their pbp of Revolution soccer complete his duties from the studio (or was it his house?!) instead of sending him on a road trip.
