Fox Sports Sends Stephen A. Smith Packing

It is being reported that Indianapolis-based "Zack and Jack" will be replacing "The Stephen A. Smith Show" as Fox Sports Radio's morning drive show starting next year:
http://www.dailygazette.com/weblogs...nd-jack-replaces-smith-on-fox-sports-radio-i/

I have previously read on this board about how FSR started offering a Z&J simulcast as an alternative for some stations that didn't want to carry SAS. Turns out, FSR was basically grooming Z&J to replace SAS all along.

Quite frankly, that didn't take long... ::) (Only you die-hard Stephen A. Smith fans will get that reference.)

Yay. Another one of FSR's infamous programming missteps - the swapping of Czabe for Stephen A. - comes home to roost. Although not as disastrous as the Tony Bruno-for-Van Earl Wright swap, but vastly worse than the cancellation of "Kiley & Booms." What an EPIC FAIL for Don Martin. :D

Good news is, there's three less hours of SuperStation KLAC to deal with. But, sadly, Petros Papadakis and Victor Jacobs are still employed, and more's the pity. :(

I found this in my inbox, which was sent to Don Martin on 12/11/09:

"There is a reason Mr. Smith got phased out at ESPN. He's just a
screamer with no knowledge. His show will cause a reduction in
affiliate programming. I haven't crunched any numbers but I'm willing
to bet the loss the network takes will far exceed the salary Czaban
was seeking.

It's looking like 2004 repeating and that fatal mistake is on the verge."

People keep saying Superstation KLAC, but you can only apply that term to the afternoon and evening shows. Smith wasn't part of KLAC to begin with. Czaban had a spot on KLAC early mornings before Smith took the whole network slot. His show is based in NYC and is probably the most east coast show on the lineup. Hell, his theme song is Empire State of Mind.

What I find most humorous about this decision is how much FSR was behind Stephen A. Smith and how confident they were that this show would get them that glorious New York City affiliate clearance, only to ditch the show so quickly.

agreed. fsr will probably try to bring in a big name pop culture/sports morning voice.

geez. i fear a pat o'brien "entertainment this morning" type show with "sports" on the side.

Forgive us, for the stench from the 3-10 PM ET time slot stinks up the rest of the network. ;)

I have listened quite a bit to Zakk & Jack and think that not only is it a whole lot better than SAS but it will make Hartman and Co seem pale by comparison. No shot at Hartman just the jackass's in his studio. When is Fox going to get serious?

Let me just say a couple of things. First and foremost Czab should have been canceled cause he is a homer ass clown that only cared about DC sports. His skits were tired and lame. I live in the DC area and I don't even listen to him here. And second, FSR has just made the biggest mistake in their life removing SAS. He spoke the real. Before SAS started with FSR, I didn't like him but listening to him I now see I didn't understand him. Goodbye FSR. Hope all you Czab followers are happy. Although I can't see how since Czab's not back. Later. Out.

This Czabe follower is very happy. I never got the 'homer' vibe from Czabe on his national show. What exactly could he be a homer about? All the relevant DC teams stink and have for many years.

Not going to miss SAS at all. He was solid on pro hoops, but that was about it. Can't recall the last time I even tuned his show on. Not saying the guy doesn't have talent, but he was a bad fit for morning radio. SAS might be better off going after a show on the Sirius NBA channel. In any case, looks like he will have more time to eat his beloved cheese doodles.

Congrats FSR for another smart move when it comes to SAS. The first was to offer Z&J as an alternative. Second is cutting SAS from the network.

FSR management (Don Martin and friends) truly need to remember that not every affiliate is in a large metro, nor are we all on the west coast. What plays in LA doesn't necessarily play in a 75-120 (Arbitron) market.

I hope Z&J get a chance to fill the SAS spot network wide. They're a solid show that (wait for it....) talks sports.

couldn't have said it better. he needs to stop the crossover attempts. stick to hoops.

loved the doodles reference...

As far as I've read, FSR has no other AM drive show in the wings, so they'll presumably just feed Zakk and Jack down the main FSR line starting 1/3.

That, and the simple fact that LA is a horrible sports town.

There isn't much to say about Petros Papadakis and Matt Smith's abortion of a program. Petros is easily the #1 worst sports host in the nation, with Victor Jacobs a strong #2. (And believe me, there is little good sports talk in Cleveland, so I have a low bar to go from.)

Out of the network's top three hosts - Dan Patrick, Tony Bruno and Ben Maller - only Maller is actually employed by the network. That's shameful, and why FSR absolutely deserves the "SuperStation KLAC" name.

If that was Martin's reasoning for hiring SAS, then that's exhibiting an alarming level of stupidity.

The ONLY way FSR will get a NYC clearance is for Clear Channel to buy an AM station in the market and convert it to sports/talk. And that station will never be able to compete against WFAN and WEPN. Aside from that, they will never ever ever ever ever get an NYC clearance.

Frankly, *I* have a better chance of getting on morning drive sports talk radio in NYC than FSR has of clearing the network there. :D
