Fox Sports vs ESPN

In Charlotte, we recently had a new Sports Talk station come about on 730 AM. It's mostly Fox Sports Network. I noticed that their personalities (specifically the afternoon show) take numerous shots at ESPN. Is it a case of envy? It gets rather annoying if you want to hear sports talk only, not attacks at the rival. Have you heard the same thing?

Fox Sports Radio has done that ever since the network was launched ten years ago. Some of the hosts will even refer to it as "The Four-Letter Network."

There's one thing that ESPN does have, however, that FSR doesn't: clearances in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco. Clear Channel doesn't own sports stations in any of those markets.

*Yes, I know that Bruno's show is obviously cleared on ESPN affils in both SF and Philly, and J.T. airs on the market's SNR affil (the fueled-by-propane-at-night KTRB). But again, neither city actually has a true FSR affiliate.

Apparently the Fox comments are not relegated to sports, or radio.

On a local Fox affiliate last week the anchors were reading a story off the prompter which included mention of MSNBC. After finishing the piece the anchor said something to the effect "I didn't think we were allowed to say that" to which the other anchor said "I wouldn't think they'd (MSNBC) want us to mention them".

The slam-your-competitor schtick is just like trash talking in sports. It's like "sports talk only," but put in practice rather than theory only.

make that 2: if you want national sports broadcasting rights with some sports, you have to go with ESPN.

I used to really like FSR as an alternative to ESPN radio, but it's become very boring/cliche/over-the-top.

The sports updates are only every 30 minutes versus every 20 on ESPN radio. I also feel like the updates are so brief you barely get any scores/news, unless it involves big market teams/games.

The production values for both FSR and SNR seem to have slipped lately. Both sound like they're originating from a shack somewhere in northern Iowa.

SNR has also become an FSR clone. Hiring the old voiceover guy from FSR and the "Zabe."

Granted most fans rely on the internet or TV for sports news, but for those of us who drive a lot we rely on our radios.

I rather have the half hour update vs. the 20 minute one. Especially if most of the scores are yesterdays score. Both radio networks will update live scores as they change.

Have a feeling I am going to agree with Quagmire here... giggity
(plus I have a suspicion he MIGHT be an Oklahoma guy which is good by me)

I hate what Fox Sports has become. Most of the weekend day time programming has been unlistenable for 2 years, but it seems as if it is getting even worse. (and i thought nothing was worse than Moriarty and Webber) FSR is taking a bad approach. They send out press releases touting major market hires, and none of them are connecting.
With great games kicking off all over the country Saturday the FSR guy paired with Lincoln Kennedy was talking about what he should wear for Halloween?! I'm all about personality radio, but come on guys its FOOTBALL Season.

The best show they have on FSR is Maller on Sunday during NFL games. While Fweddie Jackson is busy reading some horribly scripted take, at least Maller and (gasp) Looney are going from game to game and giving you a ton of info.

I have been preferring SNR lately.
I forgot about the ol' scripted takes, especially on ESPN. I haven't noticed any lately on SNR. I can't listen when it gets so obvious they are reading their ideas straight off. Just put it on the internet and let me find it, if I care.

Not anymore, ESPN during the day has gone to 2 Sportscenter's an hour (both hard timed to the top and bottom of the hour) and no more "Sportscenter every 20 minutes" liners even nights and weekends when they do 3 an hour.

I find myself going to ESPN. FOX has gotten to silly. People laughing at their own, unfunny jokes. Hard to beat Clayton, Schefter, Mortenson as analysts.

Isn't John "J.T." Tournour still a columnist for MSNBC.com? I remember he has promoted the column quite openly on his show...

It's envy. Envy that they're not working for the number one sports network. They take shots at it when they know in their minds that if ESPN Radio offered them a gig, they couldn't sign that contract fast enough.

Thanks. Czaban introduces him as "Falls McGirt" or "Balls McGirt" for some odd reason. I still can't understand which name he is saying.

What's the name of the voiceover guy?

Pat Davis.

I thought his last name was Evans.

You are correct, it is Pat Evans.

Interestingly, this blog post noting his imaging work for FSR was posted days before Evans was fired, all due to the transition to "SuperStation KLAC."
