Fox to carry U.S. Open golf in 2015

This content certainly makes FS1 even a more credible competitior to ESPN even though it's NBC that lost the rights.

Clearly Fox isn't being cheap in the launch of this.

The deal includes all the USGA's amateur tournaments as well, not than many will tune in the Senior Women's Amateur quarterfinals. But they'll be on FS1 or 2. Fox will cover the three opens on the weekend. NY Times reporting the deal is worth at least double what NBC/Golf Channel and ESPN were paying, and that was $37 million a year.

Well, ESPN did carry the first two rounds.

...and the replays - going back to 1981 or 82, when ABC covered the event.

FOX obviously wanted a nice big carrot to dangle. They got one today, totally out of left field.

Since they have little history in airing golf, it will be interesting to see who Fox gets for hosting and commentators.

And who'll produce and direct. Live TV golf is hard to do, and harder to do well. Fox will be hiring for a season of USGA golf from June to October.

Will we see an animated mascot for Golf on Fox??(Remember the NASCAR rodent?)

I think Fox will do well with golf. They're known for innovative coverage of pretty much every sport they've aired.

Right down to using the same theme song for pretty much every sport...[/sarcasm]

Fox is likely going after the NBA next. They also made it official today that Fuel will become Fox Sports 2 on August 17. http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/494986-Fox_Targeting_FS1_to_Be_Profitable_By_2016.php

I think Fox will do well with golf. They're known for innovative coverage of pretty much every sport they've aired. Can't wait to see what they do.
Knowing they're history, I would not be surprised if FOX made an attempt to get both the ESPN/ABC and TNT packages and combined them into a single master package. The threat of FOX Sports 1 is why ESPN is desperate to renew the NBA before the window closes.

Is FOX going to use a glowing golf ball graphic like they did in the 90s with the hockey puck. Had to bring glow puck up.

As for NBA doubt TNT will let it go as they been doing basketball as long as I can remember. And im sure ESPN doesn't want to lose it. Also might NBC want part of the NBA deal. Would be a good move as they could use their CSN regional networks.

A lot of convergance could be working for Fox and against Disney (ESPN). Disney just posted flat earnings that were only flat because of stellar performance by ESPN to cover write downs at the studio. If ESPN senior management goes to Disney management wanting to spend a lot of new money that would impact earnings in the short term, it might be met with resistance and open the door to Fox getting programming they might not otherwise have a shot at.

I think that Disney recognizes they need to let ESPN spend to be dominant, but one never knows. If Fox does land the NBA and provides a credible alternative to ESPN how long before major cable companies start pushing back against the $5+ per subscriber fee that ESPN gets?

Where would it fit in the schedule for CBS? Sunday is for NFL and Saturday is for college football and college basketball during the fall and winter.

Saturday after College Football is over in December in the Evenings because ABC/ESPN has Sunday. Know CBSSN Tuesday or Thursday or Monday because ESPN has Wednesday and Friday.

With the 2015 U.S. Open golf tournament being on the West Coast, given the later sunset times in June, I could see four nights of prime-time coverage on Fox's broadcast network that year (8-10 P.M. EDT Thursday and Friday; 4:30 to 11 P.M. EDT Saturday and Sunday), with Fox Sports 1 getting coverage between 1 and 8 P.M. EDT on each of the first two days and perhaps 3 to 4:30 P.M. EDT on the weekend.

Maybe by that time, Tiger Woods will finally break his winless streak in "major" tournaments! ;)

NBC has allowed coverage of West Coast US Opens to spill over into primetime in recent years.

Like 2012 when the Open was at Olympic in San Francisco.

OTOH I don't remember if the 2010 Open at Pebble Beach was in East Coast prime time.

The 2015 Open site, more specifically, will be Chambers Bay near Tacoma, WA, which is a lot further north than the Bay Area, meaning even later sunsets in mid-June. (The 2014 Open will be a right coast affair [Pinehurst]).
