FOX to set a new "Extended Primetime" schedule come Jan, 2010

I can't recall when I've seen a bigger mountain made out of a smaller molehill.
This is a one shot deal that is only happening because they'll have a huge audience after the playoff game.

WLMT Memphis/WJKT Jackson (WPTY)*

WLMT is actually a CW station and WJKT is Fox, but it's correct that WPTY produces the 9 PM news which is simulcast by them. The Fox affiliate in Memphis is WHBQ.

Oh well, at least I had it half right...completely forgot about WHBQ :D

Early on in FOX's history, the network used to program the 10-11 p.m. time slot Sundays with scripted programming. I'm not sure when the practice started, but recall it ended when the 1992-93 season wrapped. Off the top of my head I can think of a bunch of shows that aired in that time slot. Among them: "Flying Blind" and "Woops!" (during the last season). "The Tracy Ullman Show" and "It's Gary Shandling's Show" also aired in that hour during the 1989-90 season. My memory is fuzzy on what aired during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons, or before 1989-90 (if there were any programs).

My local FOX affiliate here in Milwaukee (at the time WCGV-TV, Channel 24) used to air "Comic Strip Live" Saturday nights, I believe at 10 p.m. CDT., when the show was in production.

The bigger point to be made here, I think, is this: Any Fox affiliate whose news is produced by another station with an 11 PM newscast (or vice versa) already has a contingency plan for what happens when Fox programming runs past 10 - and they've had to use it plenty of times, especially during MLB postseason.

In many cases, the plan involves starting to tape a newscast once the delay runs past a certain time, so if the network is still going at 10:20, for instance, they'll start taping a :30 local show. If Fox signs off at any point between then and 11:35, that :30 taped show will start playing. If Fox goes past 11:35, some stations will start a live local newscast after that; others pack it in for the night and leave the tape to run.

The only difference between that and this is that for this January late night, the stations already know exactly how late the network will be and can adjust accordingly. Depending on the station, that might mean taping a Fox newscast to run at 11, or simulcasting on both stations at 11, or even taping a show for the ABC/NBC/CBS station and running live at 11 on Fox. It's just another one-time delay.

I have heard of some stations in this case just running its normal programming for that time (such as sitcoms), if the game did not end by 11PM.

Just for the record, here are the Fox stations that partner with other Big 3 stations in their markets:

Delayed broadcast of partner's news:
KVHP Lake Charles (delays WGMB Baton Rouge's 6pm news by 3 hrs)

According to Wikipedia, KVHP shows WBRZ's 6PM newscast at 9PM.

And they're not the only station that picks up news from WBRZ...
KBTR-CA 41 (which uses "WBTR" on air) in Baton Rouge also carries WBRZ's morning newscast (WBRZ is their sister station).

WGMB's newscast is partially relayed by KADN in Lafayette (according to http://ekimmell2.tripod.com/list5.html )

WNDU will probably remain an NBC affilliate as long as NBC carries Notre Dame football, even though the university no longer owns the station.

KTVU, the Fox affiliate in the SF Bay Area has a large and highly respected news department. The jewel in their crown is the 10 O'Clock News which has been both a favorite of critics and a ratings winner for over 3 decades - before they were a Fox station.

I doubt they would ever, ever EVER (did I say "ever?") give up news at 10:00 for Fox programming. The occasional delay for an awards show or sporting event is entirely different.

WGHP was an ABC affiliate before Fox took over, and they were VHF. So their news operation is strong. The ABC affiliate, with a terrible UHF signal, tried news and couldn't survive. DTV, of course, has levelled the playing field signalwise, though that ABC affiliate pretty much had to move their tower.

I don't think WBRC would take a third hour of network
programming either. Like WGHP, it is a VHF (Ch. 6) former
ABC affiliate with a strong news operation; its 9 PM newscast
is one of the highest-rated in the country. Unlike WXLV,
ABC33/40 is also fairly strong and does local news.

I also need to correct a statement I made on an earlier
posting on this thread: CBS, not NBC, has the Super Bowl
this year.

Incidentally, last night, the cable guide listed the Fox network's primetime as the President's address at 8 PM, followed by "So You Think You Can Dance," starting at 8:30 PM and going all the way to 11 PM! Did anyone watch and find out if it ran that long? I don't think even "American Idol" ever ran past 10:05!

Then the guide was wrong; Fox never scheduled Dance until 11, only until 10.

Nevertheless, we'll have to see if that gives NBC a shot in the arm (they also have
the Super Bowl this year but one night isn't going to have a long-
term effect).
Umm....CORRECTION

NBC DOES NOT have the Super Bowl this year. That goes to CBS. NBC had it last year (And they were better then than they are now).

As for FOX going after NBC's current weakness, I can see that happening. Because NBC affiliates can't benefit from decent ratings at 11 PM ET/PT/10 PM CT/MTif they don't have support from the network (Which they don't have right now). As such, it wouldn't be the least bit surprising to see 24 moved from it's mainstay Monday 9:00 PM ET/PT/8:00 CT/MT to a new Monday 10 PM ET/PT/9:00 PM CT/MT when Season 8 debuts this January.

Just my opinion.....

Or how 'bout this.....

With many NBC affiliates with FOX duopolies doing so poorly because of the network (Mainly as an example of my point), they could run the late news live on the NBC station, but repeat it later on the FOX station as soon as network goes off (Whenever that is).

This way if they don't get those viewers who have to get up early in the morning, they'll still get the night owl news junkies before they flip over to the cable channels for their repeats.

Thoughts?

Cheers :D

Not KDVR 31 here in Denver. Ever since they started news, they'd do a live newscast no matter what time it was.

That said, I'm not sure if they would actually do one if the game didn't end until 2:00 AM in the morning like that regular season 22 inning Rockies-Padres game (Which aired on FSN) did. That would likely be a stretch.....

Just my $.02 worth.....

Cheers :D
