FOX-TV AFFILIATION IN SAN DIEGO

Garrett said:
Chris just posted the latest promos from KSWB on the switch to Fox on his website (via youtube) on http://www.sdradio.net (thanks Chris!).
From the looks of it, it seems that they have changed logos. Originally it seems they were going to go with the current Fox 6 logo. Now, it seems they have switched to a Fox O & O corporate logo, similar to those used by Fox 11 in LA, Fox 5 in NY, etc.
I wonder why this is...?

LOL - the v/o is from the same guy that does v/o's for the Whataburger chain. What-a-network! Just like you like it.

They don't even have What-A-Burgers in San Diego, or anywhere in CA for that matter, its a Texas thang.

Whataburger is not just "a Texas thang," they also operate in New Mexico, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia and (across the Colorado River) in Arizona.

And in the case of "What-A-Burger" (note exact spelling), it's a Virginia "thang". Yes, there's an unrelated What-A-Burger chain in Virginia and the Carolinas.

I stand corrected, then. It was my mis-guided understanding that they were not interested in expanding outside of Texas.
I am not aware of any in California.

But that's ok, they closed that last Jack and the Box here just before I got here in 1998.

Don't know where you got your info from - they had Whataburgers in Phoenix in 1973.

Jack in the Box also had locations in Florida and other eastern states until the early 1980s, when they closed most of these locations down (I think the only Jack in the Boxes east of the Mississippi today are in the Charlotte area).

Whataburger opened its first Florida store in Pensacola in 1959 -- though it wasn't until around 2003 when they expanded around the rest of the state.

What were we talking about?

We were talking about the Fox affiliation switch in San Diego until a certain Whataburger pitchman moonlighting as a KSWB imaging voice made us hungry.

This *has* gotten rather off-subject, hasn't it?!

There are Jack in the Boxes in Nashville.

My fault - I was just commenting on the v/o guy on the Fox San Diego spots. Not only is it the same person, but the spots use the same dry wit that Whataburger's commercials use.

At the risk of hijacking this thread in another direction, I wonder if it's the same ad agency? Just wondering - I can live without the answer to this one.

The Tribune doesn't own part of the CW, they were an investor in the WB but sold that interest as part of their deal to get affiliation agreements.

I wonder come August 1 what well san diego 6 do during prime time I guess show movies.

I don't think Bay City/Entravision will stand having no kind of network affilliation on XETV.  If the worst came to worst and they don't get the CW, they might at well just take FOX's "consolation prize" and move MyNetworkTV to 6, to at least scrape out whatever revenue they can.  Then for XHDTV, either turn the programming of XHDTV over to a mexican broadcaster, or move Univision or Telefutura to it.

For The CW though... I don't think it'll stay on a sub-channel for long.  I think Sam Zell and Tribune will eventually seek out and purchase a low-power outlet in the market (KSDX, KDTF, or KBNT, should the above occur perhaps, and thereby creating a new duopoly in the market), put The CW on one of those stations, and convert it to a digital Class-A or full-power station eventually, so it may broadcast in HD over the air.   This is of course if KUSI doesn't get The CW first.

I'm still trolling through the Whois sites, to see if I can fetch any "inside information" on any new web domains created as a result of the affiliation switches.  If KUSI got The CW though, I don't see the station or their website changing the imaging or name much, other than attaching a small "The CW" logo near their existing KUSI News 9/51 logo, much like KTLA or WGN.

Nobody is going to buy a low power station when you can simply use a digital subchannel. The subchannel will give you greater over the air coverage and will not require additional overhead. It true that you wouldn't be able to watch HD over-the-air; but you could directly feed the HD signal to cable and satellite customers who make up over 90% of the viewers.

All this hubbub over who gets a fifth rated network is ridiculous, especially since it's probably going to be dead in 2 years. It's only 2 hours of programming during the week folks. CW affiliates are practically independents already.

Well Zell's company is strictly a capital venture company, they are in it to make big bucks not for broadcasting, so when trying to predict what the Tribune will do now you have to remember that that is all Zell and his lot are interested in, making a LOT of money.

:)

So if he feels it could make money he'd do it.
