Just hearing the depressing news that Frank Asbury has passed away. I know him from my time working at Metro but he's done news in the valley for a very long time. I'm not sure what all of his stops were, but I know he told me several stories about his time at KNIX when Buck owned it. He was an excellent newsman and easily one of the greatest people this planet has ever seen and he will be missed.

Frank Asbury was a great newsman and part of the team back when KOY had a tremendous news department that featured H.G. Listiak, Ted Brown, Bob Scott...and my brother Dave McClay. I believe Dave Zorn as well. I knew him when I worked at Metro Networks. A tremendous man who will be really missed. He has already been shown his place in Heaven.
Frank was one of the very best newsmen in the biz. He was part of the legendary team at the original K O Y which included Joe Adams, Bob Scott, Denis Martyn, Paul McGonigle and - as a prior poster mentioned - many others at that station.
Sorry to hear of his passing. May he rest in God's love and peace.

Below is the email Metro Source sent to us employees. Yesterday, an impromptu memorial appeared on the hallway bench where Frank used to take a breather. There's a photo, a can of Frank's favorite soda, snacks and farewell notes. That sweet man touched all of us deeply.

If I recall he worked with Bill Heywood again at KCCF in 1997 and was his co-host for a while.

Even though Frank and I have known each other for quite a while, it was not until my return to full-time back at Metro last December that we really got to know each other, as our hours into the night were quite similar.
I sure miss Frank :'( "stealing" my snacks! I just told him that he could continue to have as many of my snacks as he wanted... as long as he does not scare me!
For those of you that miss this very genuine, kind nature d man, I learned a few things recently that I would like to pass along...
Frank was born in Phoenix at St. Joe's when it was located within a few blocks of Phoenix Union High School. Much of his boyhood was spent in Encanto Park. Frank went to Kenilworth Elementary, West Phoenix High School, U.S.C. and A.S.U.
Before Frank's incredible radio broadcast career Frank worked as a control tower operator in the U.S. Army, he was an "iceman" for an ice company and was a door to door milkman for Borden Dairy!
Frank's broadcasting career began in Phoenix and included Houston and Albuquerque. Most of his radio work was done for KOY, where he was at various times, a disc jockey, talk-show host, sports director and news anchor. He also flew traffic watch for KOY, "KOY IN THE SKY." He then went to KNIX as a news anchor, then news director. Frank worked with W in the morning for several years.
For his journalism work he received awards from the Arizona Press Club, the Arizona AP Broadcasters Association, the American Bar Association and the Scripps Howard Foundation.
