Frank Fixaris dies in house fire

Very sad news for Maine radio and television. My sincerest condolences to the family of Frank Fixaris and his many colleagues.

Very sad indeed. Frank Fixaris was a staple on Channel 13 (WGAN/WGME) Sports for as long as I can remember. I used to watch his reports while vacationing in New Hampshire back in the early to mid 70's. My thoughts and prayers go to the Fixaris family and his fellow workers at WJAB.

Fix was indeed a unique, rare individual. he loved his sports. it wasn't just something he did to make a buck. and he was a great, roll-up-your-sleeves broadcaster, too. cut his teeth as a baby dj and went on to do it all.

if one were to listen to some of his old between-periods fodder during the Mariners/Pirates broadcasts, you'd be amazed that he could fill 18 minutes without much more than a scoresheet and a copy of that day's press box notes.

and watching him during his tv days - he'd type his own copy then barely give it a glance. he was not a huge fan of the tele-promter.

that he spent his final days doing what he loved best, talkin' sports, is appropo. sad is the way it ended.

thanks, Frank, for some great memories.

Two of my favorite "Frank Fixaris memories" (and believe me...there are several others) include watching his enthusiasm for his work....whether he was anchoring the WGME nightly sport segment, or doing play-by-play in front of a camera. Frank also provided plenty of enthusiasm (by way of his vocal skills) to describe every moment of a professional sports contest or high school athletic game to a radio listener.

No question about it...the man LOVED his work.

Something that always impressed me about Frank was the fact that he would NEVER belittle his listeners, his viewers or 'non-sports types' (like myself) for their lack of knowledge about a particular team, player or type of sport. If you asked him a question about a sport, Frank would usually take the time to provide an answer. And his responses were accompanied with a great deal of patience.

Frank will definitely be missed....ON and OFF THE AIR.

Bud Sawyer and Fix at the same station, eh. Two legends at a legendary station, which, in cruel irony, is now sports 100% off the bird.

They definitely don't make 'em like that anymore. A damn shame. Today's generation of "broadcasters" could learn a thing or two from Fix. Godspeed and we'll see you on the "other side" someday, friend.
