Frank on Cape Cod

at least that's the indication on 101.1 and 93.5, which has stopped playing oldies and is now running recorded loops announcing "we're building a brand new new station custom designed for you, cape cod". Sandwiched in between are sweepers from movies that say "Frank" throughout.

sort of makes sense as they wont have to hire jocks, the station's image guy can produce all the local sweeps, and that's what they were doing anyway with the oldies station.

only problem is, we really liked the 70's leaning soul, pop and dance oldies. dont think we want to hear that mixed in with 38 Special and Right Said Fred.

If 93.5/101.1 is going "Frank," don't expect it to be like Mike, Jack, or the others. Frank is just clasic hits, similar to WROR. Their other Franks do have DJs, but lots of voicetracking.
 
good lord, we dont need another classic hits station on the cape. the classic hits/rock of shared artists is well burnt out in this market, with WMVY, The Rocket, Cool 102, and PIXY 103 crossing playlists/artists all the time. Adding a Frank down here, on a weaker signal to boot, is just overkill.

and I when I said 'hello b101' I didnt mean to suggest they are playing right said fred - I meant it in the sense of "i'll be listening to b101 now'.

Well that's a shame, especially when there's already an established classic hits station on Cape Cod (Cool 102) and classic rocker 104.7 WKPE. Was there anything wrong with 101.1 and 93.5 being oldies?

But Frank type stations are classic hits type stations so they don't play Right Said Fred. That song would be only heard on a Jack or Mike. And B101 is already classic hits so a Frank is pretty much the same format but more often than not jockless. Now about Cool 102 they're classic hits already on the Cape so I don't see why anyone would go against them. If they were a heavy personality station I could see a jockless alternative but Cool's jocks aren't that talky in the 1st place so if it's a choice between laid back jocks with brief mike time and no jocks I don't see why listeners would make the switch.

.....and it is what it is. I sure hope WROR isnt playing the songs this Frank is........let's put it this way, a promo runs saying how a station is finally on the Cape that plays the music Cape Codders want to hear......no commercials for the first 10,000 songs, and then, the reason why Frank is different from other Cape stations, 'we don't play crap'. Followed by a post-up to Paula Abdul's "straight up".......

you be the judge. I hate it already.

I'm very surprised that this Frank isn't sounding exactly like their others. Maybe this is because 101.9 started saying "Cool Classic Hits" recently?

I've never heard Paula Abdul on WROR.

Sounds like this "Frank" is an "Adult (Variety) Hits" format like "Jack" or "Mike", etc...

Just because the Nassau-owned "Franks" in Northern New England are Classic Hits doesn't mean that other "Franks" elsewhere must follow suit.

I have been listening to 101.1 Jac... I mean... Frank FM from about 6pm until now (just before midnight). It's not the same classic hits format from other Nassau Frank FMs. They are doing a Variety Hits format VERY similar to CBS Radio's Jack FMs. Basically a huge variety Hot AC with songs from the '70s through today. I even heard Kelly Clarson's current song on the station.

Quite frankly (no pun intended), I love the music selection. So far, I enjoy it better than Boston's 93.7 Mike FM. Ironically, 101.1 in NYC and the Cape both were oldies stations, now they both are doing the Variety Hits format! It seems the station is more of a threat to WQRC and WCOD than any other Cape station, but of course it's lacking that full market 50,000 watt signal (unfortunatley).

I think the 93.5/101.1 frequencies did the best as an oldies station. In any case however, it is my personal opinion is that they did the right thing in not making it classic hits since it's well covered between Pixy and Cool. I'd like to predict that Frank FM will pull in better numbers than it did as an all '80s station a few years back.

Let's see how things play out. Will the station be jockless with just smart aleck voiceover comments like most Jack FMs? Does anyone know if Bumper Morgan still part of the staff? (I HOPE SO - HE'S A GREAT TALENT!)<P ID="signature">______________

I've listened for a while today too and I'm impressed. I don't know how well it will work ratings-wise, but the music selection is good. Somewhere between QRC and Mix 98-5's Whatever Weekends. I can see people listening longer to this than Mike in Boston because while the playlist is very wide... it's pretty focused. Too soon to really form a full opinion, but I'm optomistic.

Don't forget that only 101.1 was running the "80s and More" format a while back. Boch had 93.5 going as alternative "The Vault." If I remember correctly, 101.1 did pretty well with the hot AC format. Sadly, mainly jock-less "The Vault" didn't fare as well(does anyone remember when those stations were running as "The U.N." in the mid 90s???).

With this in mind, you'd think that a decent format running on BOTH frequencies could really do quite well. We'll see!

Even though this station is a bit different, when you look at how Nassau's other Franks have performed, the outlook looks good. Their NH station has transformed from a stale hot AC into a station that's pulled close to a share in the Boston book. And the Portland Frank was a hot AC (Kiss 99.9) with an OK sound but poor ratings that went straight to number 1.

Personally, I'd thought that Nassau would try country (93.5/101.1 The Wolf) as WCTK has done quite well on the Cape, but instead they seem to be going after WCIB and WCOD.

I was thinking the same thing too but maybe they figure pretty much any country station in the east is gonna play the same music anyway so unless they really localize and give people something besides the music to switch for it'd be an uphill battle.
