Jeff, a toilet seat? Well, they DO say that toilet seats are cleaner than the kitchen counter.

That was the whole point of the bit. After the story about the guy getting super glued to a Home Depot toilet seat, the ladies on the show said that that's just another reason to hover over the toilet seat, which I claimed was absurd. One week later...still disease free. (Not counting that STD back in '91, but that's cleared up nicely now)

This is the most moronic name calling thread I've ever seen...

As a student of pop culture I've listened to plenty a recorded broadcast and aircheck. Radio has always been gimmicky. Even Edward Murrow liked to hob nob with the celebs. This conversation is degrading into the sort of thing you see on the Utica or Rochester/Buffalo board!

I'm lucky they let me work weekends-let alone the occassional holiday. Since graduating from college I've worked many a job in and out of radio. I've worked insurance, retail, and technical. In college, I worked for a locally owned and operated station. This makes me no expert on either radio or jobs-but for Jeff is right. Rolling with the punches is what the world is about. Not just in radio. Yes, there could be more creative program directors, more accepting GMs and stockholders, braver jocks. But let's face it--is the general Portland populous complaning? Do they particularly care? And beyond that--what is compelling radio to you?

being employed when it's time to:
pay the mortgage, put gas in the car, get the kids through college, go to
Home Depot and buy those new non-stick toilet seats (duckin' & grinnin', bro)...

well, being employed doesn't suck. and being employed in field that is most appreciated when truly enjoyed is a rare thing.

we all have days where we know better than our bosses. but ultimately, and as was pointed out, not just in radio but everywhere: the boss may not always be right - but at the end of the day, the boss is still the boss.

to reach the employment nirvana as depicted by the derisors above, then one must be... um.... wait. i'll get it: oh yeah! Bill Freakin Gates. own the company, make the rules, roll around in the cash, pick your coworkers and at a moments whim, change the direction of whatever it is your company was supposed to be doing, just because, like dogs, you can.

by the way: to Jeff, Bill, et al - we need to bring back the fun (drunk) days of Portland radio when Jay's Oyster (or the long-since departed F.Parker Reidy's) was better-known as W-SRO (and i don't mean the station in Marlboro, MA). we gathered. we talked radio. and a whole lot of us did not work together under roof. and hell, now that Harry Nelson's back in town, we can let him buy even more drinks than he did back in the day!

In the interest of accuracy, Nassau is privately held. There are no shareholders. I get what you're trying to say - and agree on many of the points. But, the reality of this business in 2005 (and beyond. The deal that will have Cumulus and its partners taking over the Susquehana stations will make this situation even worse.) is that the passion for great radio MUST be balanced with doing what you have to to stay employed. That, my friend, doesn't make you a "yes man" - it makes you a survivor.

Since I want to keep this post "upbeat"--I'll withhold my comments about the nonsense some of us have (or had) to put up with just to be "employed" for a radio station! There ARE 2 SIDES to every story!
