Fraudulent Laguna Beach Station

The story so far in timeline format:
  • 03 June 2023: LA Times reports that a former KXRN-LP air personality has applied for a new commercial radio frequency in Laguna Beach and is awaiting call letters from the FCC. The station will be called Voice of Laguna (VoL). [1]

  • Summer 2023: VoL convinced the Laguna Beach City Council to grant their station $35,000 to provide community outreach services, including emergency broadcasts, pending a council vote on 22 Aug 2023. [2]

  • 21 Aug 2023: Council releases the significant public comments received, largely in opposition of VoL's receipt of the $35,000 grant. [3]

  • 21 Aug 2023: Council receives a 15-page document from Michelle Bradley, outlining why it's nearly impossible for a new commercial radio station to locate in the Los Angeles metro, which includes Laguna Beach. The document includes a frequency-by-frequency exhibit on why a station can not drop in to Laguna Beach, and points out that the closest recent commercial frequency to become available was in Ludlow, CA, 121 miles away. Bradley points out that there may be fraud involved if a terrestrial signal was promised. [4]

  • 22 Aug 2023: VoL host rants about the issue on his web stream, blames KXRN-LP, and points out that KXRN-LP temporarily left the (FM) airwaves during the storm, and that his station is more reliable in an emergency. [5]

  • 22 Aug 2023: City Council says that they have been advised to strike the proposal from the agenda, and will require a formal application for the grant. [6]
