In case you have not heard, South Florida record promo legend Fred Held died of cancer Tuesday, March 6 in Tennessee. Held was a 41-year music industry vet who many of us considered to be the top small label independent promotion and marketing guy in South Florida. He was responsible for breaking a bunch of dance acts, especially during the "Miami Dance Era" of the '70s and '80s.

When I was music director at Y-100/Miami and later, at I-95/Miami, Fred Held was the guy you called when you needed information and service on the latest song breaking out of the Miami club scene, He was the guy! Those of us in Miami music radio considered Fred to be family.

Held was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at last year's Winter Music Conference. Word is Fred Held will be honored at the upcoming Winter Music Conference, March 20-25 at the Miami Beach Resort.
