Fred Honsberger 1951-2009

As a dude who actually remembers hearing Honsberger anchoring at *KYW*, I'm surprised Honzo's connection to the east end of the Turnpike hasn't been mentioned on R-I yet, either on this board or the Philly board.

I learned of Honsberger's death while DXing KDKA on my homeward commute (I live in MD and work in DE) the day he died.

RIP, Fred.

Not to sound like a dolt, but did the bypass come too late to halt existing problems or did the bypass cause them?

It solved some problems and created others. In the past couple years Fred got several different medical diagnoses, few of which agreed with each other, and none of which the Doctors were able to do much about. For the last couple years he broadcast mostly from the studio in his basement, and for the last couple months before his death he was unable to do much other than his program. His wife Chris actually took to taking care of his Facebook page (updating it on instructions from Fred), on which "he" would post daily diatribes and respond to listeners. But up until the end the one thing he cared most about was the radio program, and he husbanded his energy to make sure that those hours were the best he could do.
