Fred Sells WCPQ

So Fred Eychaner's Newsweb is selling a 2nd station of his shrinking cluster (Recall they sold WKIF to Milner in 2012 and shut down WCFJ in 2015). And considering his politics, it's a stunner he's selling that signal to Carolina bible thumpers. At least there is a bit of humor or irony given the sales price is a variant of the 99 frequency.

I wonder where they're going. Fred is no spring chicken and I wonder if he's looking to wind down and retire before it's too late to enjoy life free of needing to pilot a small media and property empire. What does this portend for WCPT and his well regarded group of brokered stations?

I'm surprised the 92.5 DeKalb FM has not been sold considering it's never mentioned on the air except in the Legal ID. Unusual in these times to only promote the AM frequency of a simulcast.

Interesting. I was an internet at Nine FM back in 2008. It was fun, but of course there were no openings at the time to stick around. I was sad to see the switch to simulcast WCPT. Never listed to talk radio. I figured that wouldn't last in the long run either....I think what they needed was more of a sales force and local....as in air commercials local for each freq. Heck, we had events from Indiana to dekalb to the Wisconsin board. I know because I had to drive my old 95' to those events! ha ha

Fred's getting up in years. As i recall, he's over 70.

I expect him to start paring down the group to where it would be just the core 4 Chicago stations making the most money. He sold off WKIF in 2012 to Milner and shut off WCFJ a couple years later. Now WCPQ. After selling off 92.5 and maybe 850, the remaining 4 stations are a lot simpler to market as a small tightly located group save for WNDZ and it's Portage transmitter.
