Fred Thompson Leaving Radio?

I heard today from someone who should know that Fred Thompson is leaving radio syndication. I have no further detail at this time. Do you know anything?

Never understood the appeal of Fred Thompson. People really compared him to Ronald Reagan? He had no personality, talked slowly, and sounded as dumb as a brick.

I think this sounds like a good plan for Fred...get out while you are still on top!

In his case though..."top" is relative.

Top = not many clears, no ratings and a show that is used to torture terrorists at Gitmo.

His appeal to me is ideology. He doesn't have the personality or charisma of Ronald Reagan but he shares the same core values and beliefs...more than many GOP politicians. But just because I like him personally doesn't mean he has the aptitude to be a radio host. I haven't heard his show but can imagine it was kind of dry sounding.

That sounds like a very accurate description of Thompson. For content he's a 10, but for delivery he's about a 2.

So, back on topic: Has anyone heard anything about him leaving syndication?

We're on topic. You heard he was leaving and told us so. That means the "what" is covered. We've moved on to "why?" How is that not on topic?

Looks to me more like people's opinions of him. I really am more interested if the rumor is true and if so, when he's done. Seems obvious as to why.

Fred Thompson still has a show? :D

The only local station known to be carrying Mr. Thompson has apparently dumped him, as he no longer appears on the WELW/1330 Willoughby schedule.

http://www.welw.com/programming/schedule.html

Assuming Thompson's show was in the old O'Reilly slot (live on WELW), that means they moved up WW1's Dennis Miller to 12-2 PM.

Wouldn't be terribly surprised. He has low clearance levels even for a third-tier syndie show...

I have no facts... no logic... about Fred Thompson.

I like WATCHING him. When he communicates, he is a "package"... he needs to be seen as he is heard.

Without his facial expressions.... his spoken word seems to loose something.

In my case... I have that problem with doing the written word as a stand alone form of communication. without the facial cues and the voice inflection I find it much tougher to be received the way I transmit. So Fred, welcome to my club.

OK, checked Ohio:

http://fredthompsonshow.com/stationfinder?action=stateSearch&state=OH

It lists two stations.

Canton's WHBC/1480, if it ever ran the show, is no longer...the nights/overnights (listed 12-2 AM) have been filled with Fox Sports Radio for some time. The station has never carried Thompson during the day, it airs WW1's Dennis Miller in that slot.

Sharon PA's WPIC/790 (Youngstown market) still pictures Fred:

(look at the right hand side, there he is)

...though the "Master Schedule" shows us "The Radio Factor with Bill O'Reilly":

So, one out of two, with an asterisk.

I did check Thompson's station finder. One of the stations I found is in cobwebs these days ... WOYL, Oil City, which signed off permanently earlier this year.

I also found fascinating that WOYL, its sibling WFRA in Franklin and WKST-AM in New Castle are all listed as Pittsburgh stations. Franklin is barely in Pittsburgh's TV market 100 miles to the north in Venango County.

Those last few posts indicate that radio is leaving Thompson, but they don't indicate that Thompson is leaving radio.

WW1 does this with its affiliate lists all the time. It has listed puny stations far from Cleveland because of the TV ADI.

True, but he'd have to see the handwriting on the proverbial wall by now. He's talking basically to a few, close friends at this point, if these lists are any indication of his nationwide performance affiliate-wise.
