I don't like to see anyone with 24 years at the same property lose their job either, but let's look at this objectively. Freddie was probably the weakest full time link on that station. The main reason he stayed around as long as he did was because he's Al Burke's cocktail party buddy. The two of them attended every free food & drink event they could find under the guise of "station representation". [EDIT-inflammatory]
For me, the real story is Mr. Burke having to pick up some on-air time (who does 2 hour airshifts besides KYW?) and my good friend Mr. Angelo picking up some much deserved new responsibilities. Plenty of this move can be easily attributed to CC cuts. However, I must say I'm glad that Frank seems to have rocked the market enough to force changes at what has been a stale station. Y-102 employees be on alert, the rules are about to change and you need to get off of cruise control.
Now to be fair. I am a bitter 14 year radio vet who has been knocking on doors for 9 years trying to get back in. Mr Burke is not one of my favorite people, mainly because I have applied 4 times for part-time positions he has advertised and he hasn't had the decency to even let me know with his own voice that he's not interested. Each time I've applied I followed up with phone calls and he won't even speak to me. Won't return messages. He wouldn't even acknowledge that he received my packages. To me, that's very unprofessional. Especially for a guy who is a PD at a CC station. You'd think he'd be a little more corporately savvy than that. Yes, it would make me very happy to see someone else make the hiring decisions at Y-102, and give me a fair chance to join their staff. Say what you will about my rant about Freddie and Mr. Burke, but at least I was man enough to admit the source of my tirade. I realize I've killed any chance I had of being hired while Al is still there, but I'm gambling that SOMEONE will be attracted to the fire in my belly and the candor rarely found in today's jocks.
All that said, I sincerely hope that Freddie has learned some of life's lessons and rebounds quickly. I wish him well in the future, and that he lands on his feet soon. I once lost a job 2 days before Christmas. I had a wife, 6 year old and 4 year old at the time. Not fun. Good luck Freddie.
