Free Advice for Citadel: Opportunity Knocking

Here's some advice for the suits at Citadel Buffalo. And they don't have to pay some hotshot consultant to tell them this...

Take WHLD and go all-sports!

Yes you heard right...ALL-SPORTS.

But what about WGR? They are so vulnerable right now, it's comical. Besides, Citadel has the A-bomb in it's arsenel...THE BILLS. I'm not saying put the Bills on WHLD, I'm saying put BILLS TALK on WHLD! Morning, noon, and night...talk Bills footbal, interview Bills players, let fans talk about the Bills...it can't miss!

All Citadel would have to do is put on a competent presenation heavy on the Bills, and fill the off hours with FOX SPORTS or SPORTING NEWS RADIO, and you would smoke WGR.

If I worked at WGR I would be embarressed. They sound like babies crying all day about how the Bills won't talk to them. I also believe somebody in corporate is telling Howard Simon and Mike Schopp how to conduct themselves on the air. "Be Controversial!" Both were much better at WNSA. They sound like drooling idiots now on WGR.

I know Citadel uses the Bills to dress up the morning shows on 97 Rock and The Edge, but trust me, You can't overdo the Bills in Buffalo. They are like the Red Sox in Boston...their season never ends. And if you put WHLD Bills talk on an internet stream, you would cume thousands of out-of-town fans. Heck, you could charge $5 subscription for online Bills talk and probably get people to pay! I'm serious. Bills fans outside of Buffalo are starving for Buffalo sports talk.

You guys at Citadel can thank me later.

Re: How about these calls?

Even if you can't do it on 1270 because of contractual obligations to the Polka shows, doing it on 1120 daytime-only would be better than satellite-fed oldies. Even the calls are perfect; W-B-B-F...We're Buffalo Bills Football!

The One True WBBF had the Bills rights in Rochester for a few years in the 80s, and the joke back then was that the calls stood for "We Broadcast Bills Football"...

I still find it vaguely unsettling that the WBBF calls are in Buffalo and the WYSL calls are in the Rochester market. <P ID="signature">______________

And the WBEN-FM calls are in Philadelphia. That's just wrong.

What upsets me is that WNYR's call letters are now at some small market station in the Finger Lakes, while WEZO's call letters are God knows where.

<font size="8">G</font>ood points, but don't hold your breath waiting for that check. Citadel has bigger fish to fry and more important issues to address. Jack is making a run at the market, affecting 97 Rock and the Edge as well as Entercom's Star. Right now, it's more important for Citadel to crush Jack like the bug that it is and toss it on the Infinity "heap o' formats."

Might take some time, but if Infinity's past performance on 92.9 is any indication of future returns, give it two years.

Sports radio, like news-talk ain't a cheap format to run, at least when it's done properly. You can't "set it and forget it" and run it on Audiovault or Prophet. Well, you can, but doing it that way isn't gonna get you a five share.

People in the biz say WHLD prints money. WBBF the same. It's not likely Citadel will put that cash flow to risk or toss it out the window to go all sports. WGR has a lock on the franchise and who wants to split a 4 share? We've seen the results when WGR and WNSA were in the game. Now, if somebody wants to buy a few hours a day to do sports talk on 1270 or 1120, it's likely Citadel would be happy to sell it tom him/her.

They sure as heck aren't going to do anything to jeopard 97 rock and the Bills presence on that station.</font>

the bills should be on WGR, not 97 rock......
