They are popping up all over the place, especially the one with Kid Chris and all this Jargon about FREE-FM. IMHO it won't work, WYSP will fail without its trademark music format. How much longer will Ed, Matt and Huggy, Frank and the others be able to play the music they love. Without Matt, Huggy, Frank, and the great Rock music, the station will surely drop.

Re: How dumb are WMMR and WYSP?

I guess this is as good as any other thread to vent...

How dumb are the people that run WYSP and WMMR?

What is advertising? An announcement or reminder to the consumer of YOUR specific product or brand, and maybe a "call to action". Very simple. Frequency builds response, so you want to remind the consumer of YOUR product or brand as much as possible.

So why is it that only in radio do the "decision makers" decide to remind the consumer of THE COMPETITION! Some very simple examples:

The new name of WYSP. "Free".
The Preston and Steve billboard on 95 that states "no subscription required".
The Preston and Steve id on WMMR that states "The Preston and Steve show, no subscription required...".

To me, in both cases, it is a reminder of what is going on with the "competition" to traditional radio. Let it go! Remind people of how great YOUR product is, and forget about Stern and satellite radio. McDonalds doesn't come out with a slogan saying "we are the King of burgers", or introduce their new "McKing" sandwich...so why does radio?

If you fools would stop reminding people, they will forget.

We'll those Preston & Steve billboards get them tons of press. They were in the New York Times because of those billboards.

Ok, that's super, cause the last time I checked the New York Times covered the New York Metro, not the 8 county Philly Metro, and we are talking about one billboard and a daypart id, not the "hey nice head lights" or "stop playing with your knob" - which are both worth a relative chuckle. There is a difference between "tons of press" and an effective advertising campaign that reaches your target.

I am talking about the one specific billboard on 95 headed north just above the airport that states "no subscription required" and the very next billboard is "Howard is coming all over America on January 9th"...

So, if I am just some random guy driving on 95 and see those two billboards next to each other, what am I thinking? Here is a little hint: the Stern billboard doesn't make any reference to Preston and Steve.
