free fm actually sounds half decent on the weekend

they are playing alot of alternative and only linkin park for new metal, its nice to hear new music, nice change from throw some d's on it you here on the other 18-34 lifestyle stations.

i just wish they'd play rock from 7pm to 9pm while i cook or eat.

I agree, I got a chance to listen Saturday while doing stuff around the house. They sound great on the weekends and with that solid lineup during the weekdays their numbers should continue going up.

I think once they move O&A to afternoons and the Doghouse into the morning slot the numbers would move more. Lets see if O&A would be willing to do their normal uncensored XM show in the mornings and do a afternoon drive slot on Free FM, unless they moved to afternoons on XM too which I would probably doubt.

Lets see what happens..

Here's the problem: They may not play much nu-metal (and really, Linkin Park are nu-metal for teen girls anyway), but they don't go deep enough with their Alternative selections either. For Free-FM NY, Alternative starts and ends with Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Sadly, when they do go back to the '80s they don't play The Smiths and Depeche Mode - instead we get AC/DC and Def Leppard. Doesn't Q play those acts enough? Radio Chick notwithstanding, Free is clearly not a station that is going to be a top performer in the older demos. They can let go of the old warhorses and should adopt an actual Alternative sound during the weekends instead. Heck, even nu-metal would be preferable to hearing acts that get played ad nauseum on Q.

Crazy Cabbie! he rocks the other times I just can't listen as much...
I am glad that he is back. I wish we could just get julie slater, ben Harvy, sloggo, and will pendavis back. then I would listen all the time. no offence, but I don't like the new jocks as much as well as the music they are told to play.

What would YOU prefer - "Freecasts"? Sorry, but Mike Peer took those with him to SLC.

SF's free has never been in the books!

i like that that they play the more agressive 80's stuff, Ozzy, Motley Crue, Judas priest (ie bands Q-104 wont touch), but I agree, i'd love to see some clash, smiths, stone roses, souxie and the bansheees, and alot of other bands that should be on jack get mixed in with some of the mroe agressive stuff.

kind of a moot point now though, as i found an internet radio station out of huntington i can go to for my alternative fix. I haven't heard anything newer than 2001, but at least they are playing some rock. And 128kb/s is much better than FM I must say!

Incidentally, doesn't John Mainielli intend to pull the plug entirely on the Free Rock weekends in the not too distant future?

I would doubt it, only because it's cheaper to play music on the weekends than it would be to have weekend talkshow hosts, and makes more creative sense for Market #1 to play music than run best-ofs and infomercials like WNEW did back in the day.

I mean, it's not unheard of to have a talk/music hybrid. New Jersey 101.5 has been doing it for 15+ years now.

That's exactly what was circulating in the news when he took over though, and I believe he was even quoted as saying that was the intent...to eventually ditch music on the weekends. Of course, that could certainly change, seeing as the weekday schedule is still not totally squared away yet.

the music is indeed picking up. starting to see a nice blend of contemporary and classic rock.
id like it if they rearanged the weekday schedule for doghouse morning drive, o and a afternoon drive, ron and fez lil after that and just music blocks in between.

O&A in afternoon drive is simply NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. You'll either get Doghouse in PM drive, or the status quo.
