Free FM Day One

Ok here are my thoughts on day one

Carolla - Think the show needs some work. Seems like the show was all over the place with no real format. Was actually disppointed with the first show. Possibly it will take a few days to rub off on me

Frosty Heidi and Frank - I really loved this show and loved how it was pretty much aimed at the phoenix market today. I know that will wear off cause this was the first day on the air for phoenix but was pretty cool. I think they make a great team and pretty hillarious. Only problem is the audio was dropping in and out during the third and fourth hour. The final hour was a repeat mostly of the first hour. I was pretty sure they air for five hours in L.A. so I am not sure why we got the first hour again, possibly more problems with the audio feed. I did notice Frosty kept on saying 97.1 when they were going to break, will have to break that habit fast since they are now on in san diego and phoenix!

Tom Leykis - I have always liked his show, real edgy, in your face radio. Is pretty amazing to hear it though on the FM dial and not some shady am frequency

Overall, the presentation has been really good all day and have been enjoying the first day of the free fm format. I would like them to possibly air "best of" or repeat an hour of the previous days show of Carolla in the morning 6-7am. Yeah we get ripped cause we are in the mountain time zone but think it may be in their best interest to air Carolla 6-11 instead of 7-11.

I listened in for a bit, Carolla was kinda weak, too much talk about what a dick his father was, I got it the first 25 times, might get better.

Frosty Heidi and Frank, I couldn't get into it, three grownups talking like they are horny 16 year olds, boring as hell. It just sounded, to me, like 3 really uninteresting people trying to sound hip.

Leykis, no thanks, combover boy blows, go beat up your wife some more Tom.

Hendrie, love the guy, love the show, funny as hell, but you all knew that.

I'd like to hear Penn Gillette, that would be an interesting show.

As for the station, I was stunned by the number and length of commercial breaks. I realize also its day one and there are gaps in the number of ads sold, but who wants to hear the same 5 public service announcements 4 times an hour?

Who wants to hear any PSA's? Ever?

(the above post brought to you by the council of meandering, but well meaning satirical posts that weren't very funny, and could not be saved by making a lame PSA joke.)

When Stern was on until 11, they did 11-3, so I'd guess they're still on 10-2 PT and refeeding their last hour for LA and San Diego as well.

Always interesting to listen to Tom talk about the radio business. Truly a guy who, love him or hate him, knows and loves the biz like few others. Although he seems to have forgotten "that station up in Cave Creek" he was on.

Indeed, but it was obvious the board op was a music guy who hasn't heard of network feeds before; stepping on network spots, running liners that are too long, etc. And running spots and then cutting them off halfway to join Leykis... but it seemed to get better by 5:30 or so.

Carolla is 5-10am PT on KLSX, but that first hour could be a previous day refeed like many shows do, most recently Bob and Tom.

Alright, we get it, you don't like Tom Leykis. All I have to say is, watch out Ned and Connie. And that first hour of metrosexual-leaning Scott Conner.

Since his XTRA contract isn't up til later this month, I presume we'll be hearing music at 8pm tonight. I'd still rather have an overnight talk show... something that might actually make a dent in C2C.

I know, I dislike TL, but other people get the chance to flog their causes to death, why not me? LOL

An overnight show would be fantastic. Remember the weekend show that the old (non CC, non conglomorate) KFYI had with the late great Duke Shirlaw? "The Middle of the Damn Night" show, a repository for general bizzarness unmoderated free form talk, it was great.

Late Nite Radio

Words and Music by Bill and Taffy Danoff

There's lonely hearts in Arkansas
There's truckers in Des Moines
All there to keep me company in the early morn
A world unknown to daytime
Is forever going on
The airwaves of the nation
Between midnight and the dawn

Late night radio
Take it everywhere I go
My best friend when I'm lonely
Is my late night radio

Well I turn the dial
A little bit past one-o-one point two
In time to catch the news
And see who's shooting who
Then I hunt around for old songs
They're so good to hear again
To think of how it was
Imagine how it might have been

Late night radio
Take it everywhere I go
My best friend when I'm lonely
Is my late night radio

La La La I sing along
Cause I never know the words
La La La La La La La La
Id love to call a talk show
But I haven't got the nerve
La La La Oh Oh Oh radio

The Lord is still my shepherd
But these preachers got to go
This time of night my interest
Lies in U.F.O.s
So I turn the dial a little
Past fifty-six point three
To find myself a lullaby
To rock me off to sleep

Late night radio
Take it everywhere I go
My best friend when I'm lonely
Is my late night radio

Late night radio
Take it everywhere I go
My best friend when I'm lonely
Is my late night radio

I would even like to hear Don and Mike on tape delay, its better than no Don and Mike at all

I think Carolla will be fine in the long run, just today wasn't his day. The thing that stuck out to me the most was the fact that he said Kimmel's name like 500 times today, which got old

Couldn't stand this show. Had no real content to it.

I can see how people can like him. It will take time to grow on me

Wasn't on today, so I won't judge

David Lee Roth was worse. Trust me. Consider yourself lucky to get Carolla.

At least Carolla has done a morning show before.
______________
...co-moderator of the Satellite Radio, Phoenix, and San Diego boards...

I can't imagine the suck-ness of David Lee Roth, even when I was a teen and he had hair, I hated him.

I just got a tivo like software for the computer and internet, I'll have to get it to take Penn's show to see how it sounds.

Stunting: Lame...

Carolla: Missed it. Got into work at 6:30 a.m. Apparently I didn't miss much.

Frosty, Heidi and Frank: This is FreeFM talk? No thanks! Boring!

Tom Lekis: Self-absorbed, bombastic and boring. Oh, I did love how he took swipes at KT'R and KFYI.

I'll try Carolla tomorrow...hopefully. Otherwise, I am removing 101.5 from my presets. What a disappointing format.

Leykis also took shots at KDKB and KUPD, as if they need to be worried. Overall pretty dreadful line up...and they have to pay for this syndication? Whew!

The Edge has got to be feelin' pretty good about now.

I was listening in my truck outside a friend's home during the Zone's dying throes. Then they played "Sorrow" by Bad Religion and I just couldn't sit still -- than tune ROCKS! -- I had to get out of my truck and move, so I walked to the store. When I got back, the clock on the truck's radio said 5:02 and there was already a mock phone call on the air. RATS -- I'd missed the switch!

Could someone please tell me what the last song was that the Zone played, and what they said just before the change?

Ah, yes, the "Middle of the Damn Night" with Duke Shirlaw.

He was a good guy.

One night a bunch of us KFYI newsies were asked to be on the show en masse. It was a hoot. Not us, we basically sucked; but the callers rocked!

One guy called himself "Vog." I don't know why. But Vog apparently had been into the mushrooms or something. He was funny.

The best caller was the guy who, when Duke went to his call on-air, was caught sound asleep snoring. And it was not some fake "I'll try to be funny" snoring. The dude had really fallen asleep while on hold. Duke put him back on hold and about 15 minutes later decided to check in on him.

Still snoring.

Love ya, Duke. Peace.
