"Free FM", "Jack" or "La Preciosa in SA

The numbers for KSRX (K Rock) haven't looked real strong and I have to wonder if CBS may opt to go either to a "Jack" format or unveil the "Free FM" format here in San Antonio with 102.7.

In an earlier post, Kent had mentioned he wouldn't be surprised if CBS sold the San Antonio combo in 2006. If they did, would Clear Channel buy 102.7 and try the "La Preciosa" format? KCOR FM signed on with a "Recuerdo" format in 2000 and it seems like it did ok initially, but it didn't stay around long (I'm not sure if was ratings, revenue, product). Is "La Preciosa" viable for the San Antonio market?

K-Rock has been in a joke since it first launched. I still say Infinity/CBS Radio should of tough it out with KTFM. Even at their lowest point the original KTFM was at a 4.1. A 4.1 now would put the station in the Top 10. K-Lame sits at #18 with a 2.0. I see CBS Radio flipping 102.7 soon after they finish transitioning all the Howard Stern affiliate stations. A Jack format is likely but take a look what happened up in Austin. CBS Radio not long ago flip The Beat 104.3 to all talk and now The Beat is back. BMP owns the KTFM call letters but CBS Radio could go with Hot 102.7 or Hot 103 as they did back in the 80's and 90's.

Don't be surprised if you guys do get a "La Preciosa" or "Recuerdos" in the very near future. We, here in Houston, just had KOVE-FM 106.5 flip to "Recuerdo" today. Univision flipped it even though it had remained steady in the mid 2's in 12+. On a personal note, having family and friends in the great S.A. it is sad to see how far the once cherished and beloved KTFM-FM has fallen.

I don't see Infinity trying too many more Free FM's because they passed on it in Denver (though it was a surprise they announced a late arrival in Phoenix). I also don't think the concept will prove very successful or that it will last very long. My theory on why Infinity hasn't done much with KSRX is that they know they're not going to keep it.

To answer your first question, Clear Channel can't buy KSRX without divesting. They have 3 AM's, 4 FM's and a TV. However, I could see them divesting 92.5 since it's not ever going to be much of a player in the market. As to the viability of La Preciosa, I'd guess it would be as viable in San Antonio as it would be in many other markets that have it. San Antonio has more second and third generation Hispanics than a lot of other Texas markets, but it still has enough Spanish-dominant people to make regional Mexican viable.

CBS Radio should do something with KSRX. I never liked it in the first place. I doubt that "Free FM" would work in SA. Hot talk failed in Austin and Houston but is still okay here in DFW. Jack FM might work against Magic 105.3 but may not work well. KJKK/Dallas hasn't been doing good in ratings lately. Another thing that is a suggestion is from Denver. Just recentely CBS Radio flipped KDJM/92.5 from Urban Oldies to Country "Willie 92.5" but given the fact that SA has two strong country formats that it may not stand a chance. But I still since The Beat 104.3 is back, I say bring back KTFM on 102.7.

As for La Preciosa, this is a toughie b/c KXXM and KAJA are the only two full covered CC stations in SA and I wouldn't see 92.5 flipping to La Preciosa.<P ID="signature">______________
