Free-FM

So, what's up with this Free-FM. Its still the same CKG. With a change name, and an imaging change. Not a single thing has changed, so how can anybody be excited about FREE-FM! They should of waited until January to switch to Free-FM.

I just think they did this out of bitterness of Stern's departure to pay radio and in a way an acknowledgement that satellite radio has made a dent in the success of "free radio." To me, it just has a sour tone to it. It's stupid. We all know it's free, bu tpeople pay for it for a reason. Corporate radio still isn't understanding that their lack of creativity, originality, individuality among its stations is pushing people to pay for radio. That's my two cents.

You're right. But XM and Sirius hiring the same buffoons to create boring radio in space isn't any better. I hear the same songs ad nauseum on my XM all the time. The promos and liners are absolutely pathetic. All the spots are PIs. Sure, FM sucks most of the time, but don't think satellite will stay commercial-free forever either.

No commercials for now. And in your next (or the one after that) car, you'll have an HD Radio where you can get bluegrass on HD3 of one of the country stations in the market. That'll be free, too, in all likelihood.

It's yet another Infinity branding formula. Just like when they called their FM talk stations 'Real Radio', then 'Live' (as in Live 105.7, Live 105.3, etc. in other markets - never mind that they cribbed the moniker AND logo from their legendary alternative station in San Francisco). Now it's 'Free FM'.

I'm guessing they made the move now because of their new station acquisition in San Francisco. They slapped the Free FM tag on it immediately and tagged all their other FM hot talkers the same way (including WCKG). Just like Infinity did with 'Jack' (which obviously isn't even their format), Clear Channel did with 'Kiss' on their CHR's, Entercom did with 'The Buzz', etc., Infinity wanted their own uniform brand for their hot talkers. That's all.

At least this will be more successful for them than their last branding attempt (remember 'Blink' in New York?).<P ID="signature">______________

XM/Sirius won't be commercial free for long. Look at cable. It was commercial free for a long time. They may have premium channels, HBO/Shotime is to cable tv)but that's it. I really think that HD radio is going to be the way to go. Honestly, who want's to pay for a medium that has always been free. Granted you have a lot of choices, but once HD comes along you will have a lot of choices too. At least if they do it right.

Outside of C-SPAN and the Disney Channel, the premium channels are the *only* cable channels that have been commercial-free from the beginning and are staying that way. Cable has always had advertising--it just had less of it in the early days.

And considering that XM started out with some music channels running commercials but then went commercial-free on all of them, I don't see that policy changing any time soon--if forever. They know that no commercials on music channels is one of the things that's bringing people in besides the greater variety and Howie.

You'll just confuse these people!
Just let them wait for HD radio to arrive...whenever that will happen!
