If you've read about the various replacements Infinity has come up with for Howard Stern, you may have seen references to "Free FM", a new mix of music and information "not currently being heard on the radio." Apparently, among other things, it will include a daily talk show by Penn Gillette of Penn & Teller.

I got the following e-mail from an Infinity excutive and thought you'd be interested to see it...

You really wonder who comes up with some of these ideas...

Hmm. doesn't Teller get a word in edge wise?

I've always wondered if some sort of out-of-the-box programming like this might actually work. I realize that no one is doing such programming at the moment, other than NPR and PRI, with their usual "this is cultural so it's good for you" vibe. I think that programming like a Penn Gillette "infotainment" talk show maybe might work. Reading this description gave me the impression it could be sort of an edgy, high-energy uptown version of "Prairie Home Companion". A good name for it might even be "Penn Teller's Las Vegas Home Companion".

All of the people who said "syndicated political talk in the afternoon will never work" in the days before Rush Limbaugh, or who said "syndicated sappy love songs at night with a sob-sister hostess will never work" in the days before Delilah will all say that this format will also never work.

Then again, the people who said that a liberal slanted radio talk network wouldn't work very well were proved correct, so I guess conventional wisdom is sometimes right.
