Free FMs dying out... WFNY to flip format today?

From R&R:

Following this morning’s Opie & Anthony broadcast, CBS Radio talker WFNY/New York began airing a long, cacophonous audio collage peppered with not-so-subtle hints of a 5 p.m. format flip. Topping the rumor mill is a return to alternative and the station’s old K-Rock handle.

The pre-format flip equivalent of the Beatles’ “Revolution 9,” the ongoing collage is a surreal assembly of sound clips from TV shows, turntables slowing to a halt, vintage New York commercials and references to defunct New York stations such as “Disco 92,” even Gregorian chants and the hook from “Also Sprach Zarathustra.” Repeated amidst the audio chaos are phrases that lend credence to format change rumors, such as “Today at five” and “You’re not allowed to talk anymore.”

From AllAccess:

CBS RADIO FM Talk WFNY-F (92.3 FREE FM)/NEW YORK has dropped its embattled Talk format and is stunting with a montage of NEW YORK-themed clips punctuated by the phrase "today at 5" excerpted from a TV news promo.

And ALL ACCESS hears that the format will be a return to the Rock format and "92.3 K-ROCK" slogan dropped by the station when it flipped to Talk in JANUARY 2006. CBS VP and KROQ/L.A. programmer KEVIN WEATHERLY is in town consulting the flip, which ALL ACCESS hears will lean heavily towards 90's rock with some currents and 80's in the mix. OPIE AND ANTHONY will remain in mornings, but PD JOHN MAINELLI and the weekday airstaff, including NICK DIPAOLO, LESLIE GOLD, and RON AND FEZ are out and the new airstaff won't start until TUESDAY at the earliest.

From Coast to Coast, FREE FM is dying.

San Francisco's 106.9 Free FM is now Classic Hits 106.9 KFRC.
Now New York's 92.3 Feee FM is now K-Rock!

Which FREE FM is next?
